I saw this thread and thought...."helloooo....this is my specialist subject"...

Asus Laptops - avoid the EEEPC. yes, it's small, but unless you are under 12, the keyboard is unusable. Keys are far to small. Seriously. I've used mobile phones with more accessible keypads.
    The larger offerings....
Well, I bought a W3N in Sim Lim March 2005....Hard drive "Failed" in January 2008.....pure coincidence that I bought a Macbook Pro...
The Asus is now operating perfectly fine again. Construction is rock solid - I've carted that thing half way across the world, no problems. Apart from th Windows BSOD.

Sony Vaio TX series.....yes, it's small and could be considered quite appealing.
Factors that count against them......eye-watering price. We're not convinced on the build quality either. They tend to age poorly and show wear and tear easily. We bought 25 V505's - 3 years ago. They're all dead. Screen flex is pretty shocking on the TX (4 currently in service) - it's small and light, but is it worth running the risk of trashing the LCD?

HP - cheap. But that's down to using the largest and lower grade parts. But they are cheap, if you go for the low to mid range and are only going to do office duties. And did I mention they are cheap? to the point of almost being something you might buy for a year, then junk it and buy another one....bit like the EEPC in terms of cost.

Dell - looking better. One of my counterparts at another organisation bought about 70 of them......and swears by the next day on site warranty (not that he's used it yet). I had one about 11 years ago, and that warranty did save my Uni coursework. But they did hit a bad patch. Not sure I'd put my money there just yet.

Have you considered the Samsungs? R40's and R60's are fair priced and have a look and feel of the Mac line without the costs. Reliable too.

Course, once you've gone Mac, there's no going back.....stable & fast OS, slick software and end-to-end user experience (iPhoto album calendars, anyone?)
Just to take issue with the comments about the macbook air being better than a Macbook pro.......it's horses for courses, rather than a clear-cut victory.
If God had really intended men to fly, he'd make it easier to get to the airport.

Eee PCs are terrible. A cross between Windows and Linux. Not many functions. Wireless detector is not very good. No CD Drive. Try the Kohjinsha laptops. 10 Times better.

and for Macbook Air people. It has only 2 USB Ports and no CD Drive. Apple staff at IT Show discouraged me from even considering it.

A great website for information, and reviews (although laptops are configured differently for different countries) is http://www.notebookreview.com (check the forums/discussion as well)

EDIT: if you are a gamer (which I am not)..and need insight to a graphics card's performance, check out the following website: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Compari...rds.130.0.html

But what would you need a CD drive for nowadays? On my trip - and I am a heavy user of multimedia, plus my work requires all sorts of backup - I have only once used the CD drive to rip a CD (note: this may be illegal in your country, it's perfectly fine in mine). Today, you get everything over the internet anyway and if you desperately need a CD drive, just get one no need to carry it around all the thime.

2 USB ports ought to be enough. btw: I think the Air got one USB drive and even that is enough to plug in a mouse or so if you need one. You can always take along one of those small USB hubs. mine is as big as a cigarette lighter so this is not an argument for me. I do not have to plug in my iPod, my Camera, mouse, keyboard etc all at the same time. Especially not when I am away. When I am at home, I have everything on a USB hub that works great.

Imho: many people dont really get the concept of the MBA but its just with floppy disks. When Apple introduced the first iMac, everybody was bashing Apple for not including a Floppy drive. Look at now: who even has one of them? CDs are outdated too - you get everything on the net, backup on external drives or USB sticks. Keyboards and mouse .... bluetooth, the rest over WiFi ... what more could I want?

EEE PCs seem to be a popular choice at uni, see quite a few around class these days.
All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

I wrote my essays at uni on what was then a fairly state of the art Toshiba 386SX 16MHz 1M memory laptop with a huge 80M hard disk, a 3.5" floppy disk drive and a gas plasma screen! MS-DOS and Wordstar!

Mine was the T1850, if I remember correctly. B/w monitor, 386SX, bought it in '93/'94 while at Uni in the North East of England...

                Sold it years later.

I have an ASUS eeePC, 16 GB, Windows XP OS, use it mainly to surf net and watch net TV. Easy to carry around, is always in my checkin luggage. Bit slow when multiple programs are running, but generally satisfied with it.

For work, using a HP, company issued notebook. Restricted in installing programs all sorts of issues,......

Why do you need that sort of material when you've got a 'secretary?'

                            hahahaha

                            that was a good one!

Incidentally, I never carry my notebook(s) with me on the cabin; I put them in the checked-in luggage. Never like to work on the plane or in the lounge...

                              Brave.........unless it's a Toughbook.......
I'd hate to see the state my Mac would end up in if put through MAN baggage handling....

No, they're not Toughbooks. One is a Dell (company notebook) and the other one I'll also be taking with me next week is a Lenovo T61. I put them in padded cases, then in a TUMI, which I place inside my 24" Tumi. Never thought it's a risky move, but may be you're right and I should reconsider...

I also have a 2-yr old Samsung with a fantastic 15.4" 1640x1024 screen and great sound which I now mainly use for Photoshop work, and a Sony Vaio which I have yet to find time and take it to SIN (in a place called 'central market' or something like that) where I have been told that in half an hour they can replace its cracked HDD for 100 dollars...
