I'm just wondering if anyone has been in to check out the new casino as yet? I certainly cannot blame those of you who are locals if you have not, at $100 entry fee I would not ever go.

I'll be back in Singapore late March to early April and will have a night out there, I was also hopeing The Sands would be open by then but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

My friends have been there already, they bought the $2000 annual levy thingy so they can go in freely as they want to. It is very big, and still quite crowded as it is still new. Sands tenatively is set for an opening around mid-Apr, Universal Studios official opening is around early March.

The levy is imposed on Singaporeans & PRs to prevent addicitive and problem gambling. The levy is collected by the Singapore government.

Right now the casino is only open 75%, the rest will open in phrases shortly.

Genting is now solving the teething problems the guests are facing, so gradually it will be more stable and a breeze to gamble.

If you are a VIP member, you get access to the second level where there will be free food drinks etc, and stakes are higher up there.

        An idea for Singapore citizens.

What happens if you are a Singapore citizen and posses a foreign drivers license?

If you had a US drivers License can you get into the casino for free ?

At least I can get in for free, but gotta think of ways for my Singapore Friend. (has a US drivers License when studying there in Uni)

          Thanks for your reply feb01mel,

I'll be sure to check it out late March. Too bad the $100 fee will keep a lot of Singaporeans being able to see it in their own Country, the Government obviously think it is a must to keep problem gambling to a minimum. But how much is too much for people to be never able to see inside? To me $100 is too much.

Singaporeans need to scan their NRIC (Or Identity Card) upon entry, no driver's licence allowed.

Yes, that is the thing. You will be surprised after the levy is imposed, still many many Singapore citizens are visiting it. Asians generally love gambling, countries like Macau and Genting Malaysia as well as Star Cruises, all these places are seeing very high gambling occupancy, you will never hear them "suffering from a recession".

Thus the $100 levy is imposed. But now other problems occurring is there are now too many foreigners which are not tourists (holding passport), but work permit holders who are working here in Singapore, they have been found to be loitering and congregrating in the casino itself, there is aircon, free drinks and free accomodation (there is a casino rest corner where you can sleep). Thus now I believe the government has to come up with a solution to curb this issue, e.g. impose a $50 levy to work permit holders etc.

                  What?

You're joking, right? So - even if we don't use the rest areas and just want to walk around/gamble, we still have to pay $50?

                  Screw that...

Haha Kyo, the $50 thing yes it was just a suggestion from me. Simply too many work permit holders who loiter around according to my friends, it may soon become a low class casino. Casinos in the past used to be so classy, now it is a far cry.

The Singapore government should also impose a levy on work permit holders who want to go into the Orchard Road area. There are far too many of them loitering around - lowering the tone of the area - and sometimes not spending any money but still benefitting from the free aircon, seats etc.

Agreed and to make it convenient everyone should carry an ERP like machine on them. As they pass thru the gantry, it will automatically dedcut from their bank account or salary.

SE Asia's first Universal Studios opens in Singapore

                                Posted: 18 March 2010 1547 hrs

SINGAPORE : Southeast Asia's first Universal Studios theme park, featuring rides and attractions from box-office hits such as "Shrek" and "Madagascar", opened to enthusiastic crowds in Singapore on Thursday.

Hundreds of visitors including foreign tourists lined up to be among the first into the 20-hectare (50-acre) park, part of the US$4.4-billion Resorts World Sentosa casino complex built by Malaysia's Genting Group.

The casino, Singapore's first, started operations last month as part of a drive to draw more visitors to the city-state, which relies on man-made attractions to entice tourists.

Singaporean newlyweds Raymond Ling and Liew See Eng took the day off to try the roller-coaster rides at the seaside amusement centre.

"The whole goal was to come here first and experience the most terrifying rides. We'll definitely be taking it as many times as we can," Ling told AFP after getting off a ride called "Battlestar Galactica Human".

"It was very scary! At the first drop, I felt like my heart was going to come out," Liew said after their front-seat experience.

The park has seven zones of movie-themed attractions, including an area devoted to Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" and a version of Hollywood's famous "Walk of Fame".

Nine-year-old Chai Jing Xuan, a Singaporean girl who was one of the first to try the "Shrek 4D Adventure" ride, gave it a thumbs-up. "The best part of the ride was seeing the donkey. He was very funny," she said.

Chinese tourist Huang Wenhui, 26, an engineer who was in Singapore for a one-day stopover, joined the early crowds. "I'm not a thrill-seeker, but I'm enjoying the whole experience very much," he said.

The park houses 24 rides and attractions in all, with 18 of them originally designed or adapted for Singapore.

The theme park is also promoting itself overseas, especially to neighbouring countries.

Liang Wern Ling, director, Destination Sales, Resorts World Sentosa, said: "Asian markets are our target markets. For example, Malaysia , Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and China. What we have been doing is going out to the market itself, talking to travel agents, to our business partners, to create awareness.

"So basically travel agents are very excited to sell our products. For the next few weeks, we expect to receive more frequent independent travellers, because of the tour groups because this is not actually the travel season for the region."

Asia's only other Universal Studios movie theme park is located in Japan, while the two others are in California and Florida.

Under a phased opening, Resorts World Sentosa launched four premium hotels and a shopping and dining strip in January, followed by the casino and a convention centre last month.

Singapore gave the green light for casino gambling in 2005, hoping to boost the country's tourism appeal and draw more visitors. A marine life park, a maritime museum, a spa and two more hotels will open at Resorts World Sentosa after 2010.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore's second casino complex, is scheduled to open on April 27. It is now being completed by US-based Las Vegas Sands.

Singapore welcomed 9.7 million visitors last year, down 4.3 per cent from 2008 as the global recession hit travel demand, but arrivals have begun to pick up. There were 908,000 visitors in January, up 17.6 per cent from a year ago.
