The amount of time I've sat on a taxiway there waiting for our a/c or another ahead of us to get in or out of a bay due to congestion. Nothing worse than arriving on NZ ahead of schedule (= good immigration queues) only to be stuck and watch AF, VS, etc pull in ahead of us (= allow an hour minimum for immigration).
i just don't understand why it requires an "official escort" of operational vehicles every time it taxis? this does not happen at syd or sin... does anyone have an explanation? but i do agree with the prevailing sentiment... LAX is a nightmare.
Some areas near the terminals are heavily congested with little room. Hence the escort to keep an eye out, and towed into and out of position. Same applies for 747s at LAX.

Once out on the main taxiway no escort is needed.
thanks for the info... i did hear that LAX uses an archaic form of radar for flights on the jetways, but i didn't know they were stuck in the pleistocinian age.
