I believe this is partly caused by Airasia removing processing fee for some payment methods

So surreal that less than 2 years ago, SIA was planning to charge similar fees.

Believe they still do if you book in Australia. Correct me if I'm wrong.

if not wrong, if booking in other countries, there has always been a charge. they were trying to introduce it in Singapore.
