SQ B777 withdrawal thread

  • I wondered what was going on with that thing, did the damage to the engine happen while it was on the ground at Changi ?.
    From what I heard, the damage happened when the a/c took off. I remember seeing the a/c being surrounded by fire engines when it came back to the stands.

      • EA seems to have lost interest in acquiring another 777 for BG from SQ.

        BI apparently wants 6 777s from SQ. We shall wait and see. Their history with 777 acquisitions have been... ummm...

        UN is apparently also eyeing 777s from SQ.

          BI has a ex-UA B777 in BI colours sitting in Northern America's airports for the past 3 years. And that is a P&W engined B777, unlike SQ's RR engine. I would only believe these rumuors until I see BI doing commercial flights with the B777.

          UN is apparently also eyeing 777s from SQ.
          UN's planes do come to SIAEC for their heavy maintenance. This is a higher possibility than the BI acquisition.

            The 777 question has been in service with UN for about 20 mths Either way, GDS has been updated with the 777 schedules so it's a notch above the previous SNAFUs.

              Oops , just got myself updated that the BI B777 back in '07 broke up and the jets went to UN. If I'm not mistaken, the 777 schedules for BI on the GDS is scheduled sometime in June. That's about two months. And we have yet to see any concrete plans on which a/c from SQ( if it's true) is going to BI. Could it be the desert stored SQA ?

                  SIA's move to phase out 777-200ERs gathers pace

                  Singapore Airlines (SIA) has finalised a deal with Russian carrier Transaero for the sale of four Boeing 777-200ERs and other carriers such as Royal Brunei Airlines and Portugal's EuroAtlantic Airways are also speaking to SIA about acquiring 777s.
                  "We have now finalised an agreement with Transaero covering the sale of four 777-200s, manufacturing serial numbers 28998, 28999, 28514 and 28523," says a SIA spokesman.
                  Flightglobal's ACAS database says these are all -200ERs and three were built in 1998 while 28523 was built in 1999.
                  These aircraft are all in a two-class configuration, the spokesman adds.
                  Transaero announced late last month it would be getting 14 ex-SIA 777s but the SIA spokesman says "at that point [last month] it was a letter-of-intent" only whereas now the deal has been finalised.
                  SIA's spokesman declines to comment on whether Royal Brunei and EuroAtlantic Airways will be getting ex-SIA 777s as well.
                  But a Royal Brunei spokeswoman says the carrier does plan to add 777s in June and is working to finalise a deal in the coming days.
                  "It is no secret that the party we are speaking to is SIA," says the spokeswoman. Royal Brunei's CEO, Robert Yang, is SIA's former VP for eastern USA and South America.
                  Royal Brunei's online booking engine shows that it plans to replace its Boeing 767s on the Bandar Seri Begawan-London Heathrow route starting 24 June but the service will continue to have a stop-over in Dubai.
                  Its non-stop Bandar Seri Begawan-Brisbane service will switch from 767s to 777s effective 25 June, it says.
                  National carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines, meanwhile, has added an ex-SIA 777-200ER and this aircraft is leased from Portugal's EuroAtlantic Airways.
                  "We have one [ex-SIA 777-200ER] in the fleet with another 777-200ER in the process," says the spokesman, adding that the second aircraft will also be an ex-SIA aircraft on lease from EuroAtlantic.
                  He says the carrier is also talking to EuroAtlantic about adding a third and fourth 777-200ER.

                    How many will be left then, and what will happen to routes like AMS, FCO, ATH, JNB and AKL? Especially given low premium traffic on those routes and lack of additional 77W orders. Not sure the ER withdrawal is good news for long haul award redemptions either...

                    • The SR* birds, while 772ER's, are de-rated ones. The birds that serve AMS, CPH, AKL etc are the SV* series.

                          All of SQ's B772s are B772ERs. The only difference is the engine thrust rating which differentiates a B772 from the 772ER. And they just change an engine plug and some minor tweaks to change a B772 into a B772ER. All in a day's work ! So, the SV series won't be disturbed at the moment.

                          So will SQ order a new batch of 772s or will the A330s and B787s take their places?
                          It's highly unlikely that SQ will order any more B772s. B773ERs, maybe. The A350s and the B787s are the B777 replacements. The A330 is more of an interim replacement.

                              I mean convert the B772 to a B772ER for sale to other carriers where the cabin interior is, most probably, of little importance.

                                Are you sure it's just the SR* birds going? Seems odd that Royal Brunei would buy SR* birds, re-rate the engines and then re-fit them to the identical seating specification of the SV* aircraft (even down to Spacebeds, which are currently fitted in BI's 767s), in time to enter into service next month, as per their current timetable:
