  • The new W Seminyak - but where in Bali is Seminyak?

I'm sure I've read about the place on one of the travel forums, but where in Bali or what exactly is Seminyak? Hoppin' place?

I got this from the Seminyak wiki:

Seminyak is the most upmarket of the west coast's beaches, with high-end accommodation and mostly high-end restaurants and bars to serve its residents. The atmosphere is more rural and laid-back than Kuta, and the beach in particular is much quieter during the day, although this area too is developing fast.
    Anyone been there?

    The reason I ask:

    http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/070830/20070830005655.html?.v=1

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:HOT - News), today announced that W Hotels - the world's fastest growing luxury hotel brand - will open its first property in Indonesia in 2009.
    ...
The newly built W Retreat & Spa-Bali will be located in the Seminyak area on the paradise isle of Bali, featuring 232 rooms, including 80 luxury villas.

I've been meaning to go to Bali for a while now, having never been there before. I now know where I'll be staying if I end up there in 2009.

Thanks milehighj. How far away is it from Kuta Beach?

I can't believe I've yet to visit Bali yet virtually every 2nd person I know has. It's one of those places I've always planned to go to, yet end up putting off and heading somewhere further afield...

Yep Ku-de-ta (www.kudeta.net) is up there. I seem to remember a gang of outlaws and villains having a nice evening up there a couple of years back. I'm sure there are some photos knocking about...

i live part time in bali and if you're over 30, seminyak is a much better place to hang out compared to kuta. the new w hotel should be opened by late 2008/early 2009 i heard. the downside about seminyak is that in some places it can get a little noisy at night, as some local expats living in the area have complained about the noise level recently. the great thing about bali compared to other island (phuket/langkawi etc) is that once you're 'done' with the beach scene, you can always go up to the highlands (mountains for hiking, river rafting, etc). there are a lot of really charming artsy villages scatter all over the island. so come on down to bali!

Thanks for the advice. Seminyak does sound nice, and a place one could get away when bored with the 'scene.' I was afraid that this new W would be built in somewhere completely random like the upcoming W Festival City in DXB, so good to know that's not the case for the W Bali.

I'm not over 30. Not yet anyway.
The advice I got from friends is hang out at Kuta and "Legend Road" (or that's what it sounded like anyway ) for the clubs, but visit Seminyak for the restaurants and cocktail bars?

Since it's a W, brace yourselves for more noise coming your way.
Unless "W Retreat&Spa" means something different to a regular W?

Anyway I don't think I'll be visiting Bali for a while yet, at least not till the tail end of my 2nd DONE4 and the W is ready. But I love planning ahead.

Keith, you and your W Hotel love. When in Bali, ALWAYS stay with Aman. You won't regret them.

I seem to remember seeing one boisterous gang leader who was very happy that his football team had won. He even bought Champers for his henchmen. But yeah, they were a scary lot.

Could they be the same people who hacked into SQTalk and changed the banner a while ago??

                        Looks expensive.
Prefer something less private and more 'communal' though (ie not self-contained villas). I love hotels with lots of chill out spaces where you could socialise, and hoppin bars. A friend of mine swears by The Legend (might have got the spelling wrong) at Kuta.

So it does sound like parties go off at Seminyak?

KeithMEL, if GoogleEarth cannot find it, it does not exist.

Maybe after your visit, you can help update GoogleEarth.

                            The Legian, I think.

Cheers, no wonder nothing came up when I googled for 'legend bali.'
Yes, I think it's The Legian indeed - looks like what he described.
