Not that the service at the Westin is subpar by any measure mind you.

The Westin does have a lounge, but the SGS gives you three different options for evening cocktails ; The Sala next to the pool, the Living Room, which is the main bar near the Library and also BarSu, which is the bar/nightclub at ground level. At all of these you can just order from the bar at no charge, a system I wish more hotels would introduce. You can also have breakfast at Sala if you wish.

The Pool at the SGS is very nice, set out in a quiet tropical setting and you wouldn't think you were on Sukhumvit Road. The pool at the Westin is very poor in comparison. I also don't like the PITA double lift system at the Westin where you go up a few floors then have to walk around past reception to another set of lifts to get to your room.

As jhm says, if you need the stay credits you'd be hard pushed to find two easier properties for a mattress run. Straight across the the walkway through the BTS station. You can also eat/drink at either property and sign it to your room.
As I completely agree with MAN Flyer, I have relegated myself to the fact that KeithMEL and I will NEVER agree on hotel choices.

Mind you, everyone I know who's ever stayed there raves about the SGS and its good service so if I'd stayed there the service might win me over. But I can't get past the over the top decor... The lobby was an instant put off the moment I walked in. It's like an overdecorated birthday cake, designed by Marie Antoinette's Thai equivalent or something. BarSu was nice but I preferred to go elsewhere for nightlife. The Westin is so much more modern, and even a little hip.

Can't wait for the W and the 2 aLofts.
Or the new Le Meridien even - looks pretty cool from the pictures.

I'm with you 100% HUGE AL! I felt the onset of a migrane when KeithMEL sent me the link of where he'll be staying in SIN, and as for Prague,...well,... (sorry, can't seem to find the vomiting smilie!)

Just pulling your leg KeithMEL, you know I'm very conservative with my choice of hotels

          You mean the IC?

I actually thought the PRG one was quite tame.
Then again it was all I could find that wasn't Louis XVI style, s'pose I did well for a place like PRG.

No mate, not the IC ...I meant the hotel you've chosen for your other visit!

Are you sure the IC is trendy enough for you? Surely the fact that I'm staying there in the not too distant future brands it as being far too conservative for you

Has anyone stayed at Intercontinental BKK before? I read reviews on tripadvisor.com and everyone said is very good experience.

Never stayed there, but visited the hotel for drinks when I was in BKK. The hotel location is great, the BTS station is just in front of the hotel. It's connected to the Holiday Inn and Gaysorn next door. The location is perfect for shopping, very close to Central World and only one station away from Siam Paragon and Siam Square. Based on my observation of the front desk and the concierge, the service looks wonderful (but don't quote me on that, I only observe, not experience). Rooms are recently refurbished, so it should be pretty nice.

I stayed in Grand Hyatt Erawan and despite the fabulous service, I wish I had stay in IC. The rooms in Grand Hyatt are a bit tired and the lobby can be crowded sometimes.

Your definition of "hip" and "trendy" completely baffle quite a few of us... And these words are coming from a dude who takes the SF W over the St. Regis! AMAZING!

Thanks, nickbot! Who was it that came up with the Krug icon? Perhaps we need the vomiting one for just these purposes.

It is. Many reviews on TOF. I have stayed there many times and its my favorite hotel in BKK, beating out the SGS.

The renovated rooms look like this:

I've also stayed there a few times and it is a superb hotel. Great location, handy for Skytrain and has a fabulous club lounge.

We can argue till the cows come home on that one but you know we'd never agree. The St Regis SF is a much nicer property than the general St Regis brand I concede, but my definition of 'hip' and 'trendy' extends to the overall atmosphere of the hotel. The St Regis lacks The Attitude (note use of caps, hmm I should sell the W my marketing ideas ) that typifies the W experience. The W is more stark, industrial and has a feel good, uptempo clubby vibe that the St Regis lacks - and will never be able to replicate because the St Regis brand has an entirely different focus and brand values.

TBH I never thought much of hotel loyalty programs till I found the W. Going into neutral territory for a bit, something like the Royalton (though it's far more exciting when I stayed there years ago) and Dream Hotel NYC are my idea of the perfect hotel experience. And the W encapsulates all the things I like about these hotels, plus has the functionality of a big chain hotel. I doubt the desk clerk at a 52 room Kelly Hoppen or Ian Schrager property would be able to get me row 3 seats (beside Suzy Menke! )at Mercedes Fashion Week launches...

Anyway from our convos it is not just about hotels that we disagree on, HUGE AL. I have long concluded that we have totally different expectations and priorities when it comes to service etc, cue our JL convo. I think this observation is something that we can safely agree upon.

And going back on topic, I agree with MAN Flyer that the BKK SPG debate will rage on forever, a city blessed with so many fine hotels. In lieu of a chain property that matches the above descriptions (there's the Metropolitan BKK and Dream Hotel BKK but i like my Starpoints ), I go for something as clean-line modern as I can find. There is something for everyone in BKK and it does really depend on your needs and expectations.

Partly due to the approvals of MAN Flyer and jjpb3 above (and partly because it's the cheapest SPG), hello from the Royal Orchid Sheraton.

It seems a nice hotel. I prefer the modern and clean decor of the room to the SGS (which from memory was darker and deliberately old). We were upgraded to the top (28th) floor overlooking the river. The lounge also has good views all around with a small breakfast with a few hot western items (although it describes itself as being a continental breakfast). We were given an IMO tacky dangly floral ring at reception (which made one of us start giggling!) and then escorted up for an in-room checkin. Welcome drinks, fruits and a white choccy elephant.

Glad you like it. It ain't no SGS that's for sure, but with some of the rates they offer it's a nice option for being on the river.

With the boat transfer to Saphan Taksin BTS station it's easy to get around as well.

They are a nice gesture I suppose but a little pointless. Twice I have left mine on the desk and they have chased after me saying 'Excuse me Mr MAN Flyer, you have left this at reception'.

I may give the Plaza Athenee or the Le Meridien a try this weekend, despite what I think are overpriced rates... I know the LM is recently refurb-ed, but it comes with a higher pricetag and it's a little off the beaten track. Then again, Wireless Road's Plaza Athenee is also not that convenient. I'd only be doing this for SPG nights, frankly, and the cheaper option is tempting. Anyone with experience care to comment? I'm not interested in the other SPG properties at this time. 3872 (Plaza) vs 4472 (LM) Thai Baht. Both charge Internet for a fee. Which is a major turn-off. Hmm, just spotted Hilton's Conrad on Wireless Rd also. Edit - nope, hopeless price on the Conrad. Will wait for future KUL stays to top-up the Hilton balance.
