  • Bangkok Hotel Hopping Weekend: Introduction

This was supposed to be the week we headed to Sao Paulo, Brazil thanks to the Turkish Air mistake fare but we opted out of it when we found the mistake fare on Emirates to Maldives. Wish we could afford both the time and money to do both! We had already bought our positioning flights on Air Asia to Bangkok for the cancelled Sao Paulo trip and since the flights were non-refundable, we headed to Bangkok for a couple of nights for a much needed short break (Work was killing me for the last couple of weeks and I was working even till the night we got to Bangkok).

As usual, the full trip report will be on my blog with the installments here:

    Introduction
    Vie Hotel Bangkok
    Pullman Bangkok King Power
    Millennium Hilton Bangkok
    Maya Restaurant at Hilton Bangkok

We ended up staying at 3 different hotels the 3 nights we were in Bangkok! We needed a night in the Hilton to make up the 3 qualifying stays for Hilton Gold Status till March 2013 thanks for a Visa Signature Challenge. The Hilton was on high end of our budget and we needed another place to stay for the other 2 nights. Accor was having it's annual Super Sale during the time we were going to be in Bangkok and we decided to split the stay between the Vie Hotel and Pullman due to supposedly Aclub Gold Status recognition and perks at these hotels. (Only Mgallery, Pullman and Sofitel hotels offer room upgrades for Aclub premium guests).

Staying in 3 different hotels in nights was somewhat of a hassle having to move hotels everyday after lunch. I wouldn't recommend doing this for "pure" tourists hoping to do sight seeing and other touristy stuff. Having been to Bangkok before, this short trip was mainly focused on eating, lounging by the pool, shopping and the cheap massages in Bangkok so the moving around did not actually bother our schedule that much. At the end of the day, we were happy to try new hotels that we never stayed before and we're pretty sure next time we're back in Bangkok, we will be staying in the Vie Hotel. Details to follow...

We arrived in Bangkok around 6pm and surprisingly the rush hour traffic from the airport to the hotel wasn't as bad as we expected. It took around ~30 minutes only. The cab driver wasn't really sure where the hotel was when we told him the name of the hotel and thankfully, we had a pre-printed map of the hotel. On a side note, the cab ride over was rather interesting with the driver telling us that he was Chinese and he could converse fluently in Mandarin. He ended up telling us about his life story of how we learned Mandarin, his ex-wife, his views in life, etc.

The check-in process went by smoothly. We were upgraded to a suite room and offered welcome drinks thanks to my Aclub Gold Status. This was my first time also that we were personally escorted to the room and showed the features of the suite.

The second hotel on this trip was the Pullman Bangkok King Power. It was rather busy and there was a slight wait for check-in when we arrived at the hotel around 3pm. On finding out that we were Aclub Gold, we were invited over to the bar next to the check-in area for a welcome drink while waiting for the paperwork to get done.

          Hi calvinoeh,

the vie hotels that are managed by Accor are branded under the "M Gallery" brand - which is Accor's boutique / individualistic hotel segment, the other vie hotel is the vie Villas Hua Hin and they are amazing!

              Millennium Hilton Bangkok

We stayed at the Millennium Hilton Bangkok for our last night in Bangkok. The taxi ride from the Pullman took about 30 minutes as there was some traffic and the Hilton is located on the "other side" of Chao Phraya River that divides Bangkok.

We were promptly asked if we were Hilton Honor members during check-in and escorted to the some sofas that were used for check-in for Hilton Honor members. We were offered a welcome drink and a much needed cold towel. Without asking, we were told that we were upgraded to an executive room and escorted to our room. There was also a personalized welcome letter from the hotel GM.

                Maya Restaurant at the Hilton

Since there weren't many options (at least options we knew about), we decided to eat in at the Hilton during our stay. In hindsight, this turned out to be a good option as it ended up raining heavily and eating in saved us the trouble of getting wet.

The Millennium Hilton has a couple of restaurants - Chinese, Steakhouse, Thai and international buffet. We decided to have dinner at the Thai restaurant called Maya.
