  • VARIG to leave Star Alliance

SAD NEWS..........No more *A in South America
    http://www.staralliance.com/en/press...ralliance.html

Viação Aérea Rio-Grandense S.A. (VARIG Brazilian Airlines or “old” VARIG) will no longer be a member of Star Alliance as of 31 January 2007. This decision was prompted by the current restructuring of the airline in which “old” VARIG continued to be a Star Alliance member, operating a reduced flight schedule on behalf of a new company, VRG Linhas Aéreas S.A. (“New” VARIG).
With “new” VARIG now having been granted an official air operator’s certificate (CHETA - Certificado de Homologação de Empresa de Transporte Aéreo) by the Brazilian authorities, “old” VARIG will in future no longer fulfil the pre-requisites for Star Alliance membership.

Having flown them many times I have to say they had it coming. Yes, it's going to be a problem for me to fly between Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre since it means I'll have to add on a side trip on a RWSTAR, but I'd rather take my chances with Gol or TAM nowadays. They've been slipping the last few years, and I can't say I'm surprised.

That's rather unfortunate to say the least. *A has some pretty big holes now in its global network (South America, JFK-LHR, Middle East). Here's to hoping they get back on their feet soon.

No domestic network in Australia too.
We're held captive by oneworld down here...

No more *A liveries on Varig's planes

These photos of two of Varig's plane [Boeing 767-341(ER) and a McDonnell Douglas MD-11] painted in *A livery is now a distant memory :

The MD-11 is active again as N285UP under the UPS livery. The 763 is stored in Rio de Janeiro.

Hole in South America notwithstanding, VARIG is appalling. They are/were a bit of an oddball and I always dreaded flying with them.

Doesn't help that GRU and GIG are no Changi's either......a pain to arrive or depart from.

Brazil the country on the other hand.......

Aside from LA (which is part of oneworld), what other decent airlines are there in South America? JJ is the only good one I can think of.
