My return flight to Singapore via London actually began in San Diego (SAN) a day earlier, on BA272, a 7.30pm departure which would get me into London at 2pm the next day.

If all went well, I would have a 5 hour transit stop in London before heading to Singapore on BA11 at 7.05pm that same day.

My bags were checked all the way through to Singapore. Knowing how unpredictable flight schedules were, not to mention arrival immigration queues, I was prepared to remain in the T5 transit area until it was time to board BA11.

But the stars were in alignment that day, and my flight from San Diego, a turbulent 9+ hour flight that was pummelled by turbulence from start to finish, and propelled along the route by strong tail winds, arrived in London 15 minutes early, at 1.45pm. Miraculously there was no queue at the Fast Track International Arrivals lane at the UK Border check either, and I was through in super quick time. I caught the Heathrow Express to Paddington and from there connected via tube to Oxford street...all in all from deplaning to Oxford street in just over an hour, by 3pm!

I spent the next hour and 45 minutes doing some shopping in London.

It helped that I knew exactly where I wanted to go...first a pilgrimage to one of the last remaining specialist classical CD / LP / music stores, Harold Moore Records, at Great Marlborough St, and then a stroll along Regent Street and Oxford Street, ending at Selfridges further up Oxford Street to buy meat, cheese and other items in the Food Hall there.

Selfridges will vacuum pack the meat and cheese for you for the long journey home. Just a bit of trivia: my experience is that half a dozen eggs in an egg carton will make it past carry-on security checks if you remove it from your hand carry and put it on the tray, along with the iPads and Laptops.

At 4.45pm, I left Selfridges and speed walked to the tube station for the short tube ride to Lancaster Gate Station, and another short speed walk to Paddington Station for the return to T5 on the Heathrow Express train. I was back at T5 by 5.30pm, where I headed straight into the airside area with my boarding pass, which had been pre-issued in SAN.

Ironically, my flight BA11 was slightly delayed that day because of an issue with one of the runways at LHR, where another BA flight had made an emergency landing earlier that afternoon.

BA11 departed about 40 min late that day from one of the T5 satellite terminals. A fairly congested gate area, although boarding took place in a very orderly way, with very strict enforcement of boarding priority.

I was flying on the main deck of the A380 that evening.

As I boarded, I glanced left into the F cabin, which occupied the front section of the A380 main deck.

BA F on the A380 looks to be arranged in 1-2-1 Herringbone layout.

I turned right and passed through the main deck J cabin, laid out 2-4-2, with the same Club World forwards/backwards lie-flat product as the upper deck, except that there was now a pair of rearward facing seats in the middle, not a solo seat.

Rearward facing pair of J seats in the middle of the cabin.

A pair of window-side J seats on the main deck...

There is no PEY on the main deck. Right after J was the Y cabin.

The Y cabin was laid out in conventional 3-4-3, a 10-abreast layout which looked very spacious in the cavernous A380 cabin.

          Emex row...

          Bulkhead seats...

Rear section of the main deck...

Fairly comfortable Y seats, with average seat recline...

Full recline in the last row of window seats on the main deck...

The mainly UK-based crew (With a few mandarin-speaking Singaporean cabin crew as well) began service with a round of drinks.

Cabin service was warm and relaxed...this was another completely full flight, and the cabin crew did an admirable job of keeping everyone fed and watered...

I asked for a G&T and was given a double without prompting. I think giving out doubles is a great practice. Apart from pax grinning from ear to ear at this generosity, imagine how much additional running around this saves the cabin crew if they had to get refills for a full flight of pax...

Meal service began from front to back. By the time it came to me in the last row, they had run out of the pasta option, but I was very happy to have the Thai Red Chicken Curry option.

This was a really good meal...

The starter was a prawn and potato salad which was creamy and tasty...

The Thai Red Curry was quite delicious, with a generous portion of chicken, moderately spicy, and moist rice...

A small bottle of soy sauce was provided, but really this was redundant (Who adds soy sauce to red curry anyway?).

The small tub of chocolate and salted caramel mousse was very tasty as well.

              Our route for today...

Window shades were drawn down for most of the flight, as the latter half was flown in daylight, but after sleeping for the first two-thirds of the flight, I woke up and headed to the rear of the aircraft for a look out through the small window in the A380 rear doors...

We flew over India and Bangladesh, where there were good views to be had of the mouth of the Ganges River, and the Sundarbans...an area with unique geography, being the largest mangrove tidal forest in the world...

Out the window, the landscape below was striking...

...with very good correspondence between what was visible out the window (above), and what was seen on the map (below)...

Further on...the landscape of Myanmar was equally striking...

Cabin ambience as the cabin lights came on prior to breakfast service...

Breakfast was served just over an hour before landing...

You had a choice of omelette or full English Breakfast...

This tasted fine, although the scrambled egg was not the most beautifully presented egg dish I have encountered. The sausage catered out of Heathrow is the closest to a proper English breakfast sausage that I have had in flight.

Overall, BA11 LHR-SIN was another very comfortable flight on the A380. BA have a very attractive product on the SIN-LHR-SIN sector, whether on the A380 or 77W.

I have not flown BA's 744 on this route, and have only done this in the past on their older equipment. I'm not sure if they have any refurbished 744's on this route, but the newer Y cabin product on the A380 (and 77W) would certainly make a difference to passenger comfort.

Any difference between flying on the upper or lower deck in Y on the BA A380? Not as far as I can tell. Both cabins were quite similar in comfort. I would be happy in either cabin.

If the price was right, I would even suggest going for BA's PEY product.

As for the feasibility of travelling from the West Coast of the USA to Singapore via London, while this takes longer than a Pacific-based routing, I did not find myself feeling any more jetlagged flying the route I did than I did on a more conventional Pacific routing.

I guess SAN-LHR-SIN (Or SFO-LHR-SIN) is still "logically" a westbound routing, although I was "physically" flying eastbound, so jetlag was still manageable. And the short London shopping trip while in transit was a welcome bonus as well.

I'll cover the LHR-BOS-ORD-SAN-LHR sectors on BA and AA in another TR.

                    Thanks for reading!

Nice TR as usual Yflyer! Looks like a solid Y product from BA. I guess (by the looks) they can increase bit of the food portion. Then I would reckon they can beat SQ? otherwise, seems alright. But the J-class arrangement seems a bit awkward for my liking. Anyways, just saw their fare on their website. Price looks rather reasonable from SIN! Tempting..

Nice report. Thanks for posting. Really admire your commitment to taking photos of all cabins showing the seating and taking the trouble to upload the images to the forum. I find it so time consuming linking images to the forum!

I had a mini tour of the upper deck of the BA a380 recently when I was mistakenly directed to go up the upper deck from the rear staircase, so had a nice tour of all cabins, except the f cabin.

It is nice to read a complimentary report on an economy long haul flight on BA for a change. I personally am happy with my BA economy flights hence could never understand why people are always complaining. They complain about food, seats, service, etc.

Amused you managed to get into central London with a relatively short connection just to shop. . What eggs were you getting? What's so special about them? I always wondered about carrying eggs as hand-carry. What would be the maximum number of eggs one could carry? I think it was a question posed by someone on a BA forum once! How did you get the info about transporting eggs?

Thanks, phaleesy! Taking all those pictures has become a (bad) habit. At some point I suspect it will get monotonous/boring-- there are only so many ways to frame a shot of pax entering an aircraft door (Or take a glamour shot of a packet of peanuts...) -- but that hasn't happened yet, and at least for now, I am glad folks are reading these reports and finding them useful or at least interesting.

I enjoy wandering around an empty airline cabin during the boarding process! (As you can see from my TR's...)

I was very happy with my BA flights in Y. I think it is all about expectations. If you fly enough, after a while you will figure out what priorities you have and what you are willing to trade off. BA has a very competitive Y product in my opinion. Even if you end up on one of their older non-refurb 777's (I flew their old 777 SAN-LHR. Ex-SIN, you will always get the 77W with the new product), it is at least still 9-abreast. And I would fly a BA 747 any time regardless of the condition of the interior. The only time I would hesitate to fly BA (Or any other airline for that matter) is if the flight was operated by a 9-abreast 787.

I didn't engineer the transit stop to be a shopping excursion to central London, but as there was just enough time in the schedule, I seized the opportunity!

London is a wonderful city to visit, even for just a few hours. My outbound was BA11 as I needed to be back in Singapore early for dinner, otherwise I would have booked BA15 as my outbound -- this departs at 9.45pm, which would have provided a good 2.5 additional hours in London!

Mrs yflyer has a lot of very good egg recipes...and the eggs you get overseas can be fresher and more delicious than the typical eggs you get in SG. There is more to life than an Omega-3 egg from NTUC. Not something for day-to-day meals of course, more for the occasional treat.

I've carried eggs into SIN from New Zealand, Australia in my hand luggage. There is typically no issue getting half a dozen eggs through airport X-ray machines when departing from those countries.

You can get some very interesting eggs in the UK, and Heathrow airport security checks do allow eggs through.

On the Singapore end, strictly speaking commercial import of eggs from the UK isn't on the AVA approved list. As handcarry and if it is a small quantity for personal consumption, I doubt this is something that customs will make a big fuss over, but officially the eggs may not be allowed into SIN, so you have been warned! Eggs from Australia and NZ are approved for you to bring in up to 30 eggs per person for personal consumption from the SG end, though I don't know what airport security will say if you load a tray up with so many eggs and send it through the X-Ray!

Thanks, Hajimbo! Yes, I was very happy with the BA Y product. Food-wise, quantities are just slightly smaller than SQ, but not tiny either -- enough for a decent meal, and the meat quantity was fairly generous.

Yes, fares on BA are very reasonable, a lot lower than SQ. Great value! The J arrangement is a love-it-or-hate-it affair. I know many regulars on SQTalk don't like it at all!
