  • Internet Connection On SQ

    Hi,

    I found this by mistake - http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/networki...ight-39117830/

This goes back to 2003. Did this ever materialize? I was convinced they didn't offer a WIFI service.

Do they offer any service to connect to the internet?

    Thanks

Yes I believe, Connexion by Boeing.

In March 2005, SIA introduced the Connexion by Boeing in-flight Internet service, and the system was extended to offer live TV in June.[81] The service ended in December 2006 when Connexion was ceased by Boeing.

SQ did and I used it several times. Most 744s were CBB equipped.

It was discontinued in late 2006 as CBB went out of business. Many talks about restarting service by Panasonic Avionics but nothing came out of it.

        Used it many times.

Reminds me of a particular MSN Messenger chat I was having with a friend aboard SQ319 one day.

My Friend: So, where are you now?

Me: erm.. about 60 miles northwest of Chemnitz.

My Friend Friend: Ah, Germany. Hope you're having fun.

        Me: Yeah

Some time later, my friend then asks another one of our mutual friends to join conversation

My Friend: Hey, SQFG's in Germany - tell him where you are again.

Me: Yeah I'm about 40 miles southeast of Chemnitz

        Our Mutual Friend: cool

My Friend : Wait a minute. You just said you were 60 miles NORTHEAST of Chemnitz?

Me: Yes, and I wasn't lying at the time. I'm not even in Germany anymore....... in fact, being 40 miles southeast of Chemnitz puts me in the Czech Republic.... make it 50 miles rather........

Lots of confusion until i explained...... but yeah I loved CBB. Somebody needs to bring back inflight internet.

I'd rather have that than any Krisworld.

+1, even as a fairly infrequent flyer I had the pleasure of using Connexion on four or five occasions and there was no better IFE. Will be flying United PS at the end of the month and am looking forward to trying their in flight internet - any experiences with this service from SQTalkers?

With regards to bringing it back, I'm no business guru but surely with the world being such a different place now - more connected, most people have WiFi on their phones, netbooks, iPads (actually, scratch that, probably have to wait until version 3.2 to get WiFi ), the rise of social networking and the fact that newer SQ interiors in Y feature power sockets, with the right pricing model and infrastructure costs I personally can't see it losing. Actually, thinking about it, even with the old infrastructure and pricing it would still probably have a fighting chance.

Hope SQ can sign on too.

There are a number of airlines introducing inflight internet access in the near future, and I have to say as someone who was not particularly impressed with being able to access the internet inflight (even though I did use Connexion when it was available on SQ), I have changed my mind now and would like to have access. I find I get bored far too easy flying these days so internet access would be handy.

I haven't flown them for a year or so but I have flown UA's transcon PS service between JFK and SFO a few times and enjoyed it. They have got SpaceBeds in 'F'.
