    Plane makes NY emergency landing

NEW YORK: A Moscow-bound passenger jet made an emergency landing back in New York on Sunday after developing an engine problem shortly after takeoff, aviation officials said.

The pilot for the Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 "decided to return to JFK due to a left engine problem," a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said, referring to John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Spokeswoman Holly Baker said there was "no fire reported" despite earlier reports to the contrary.

"The plane landed safely, the incident is being investigated," she said.

Emergency crew members had rushed to the airport fearing the worst after reports that one of the plane'e wings was ablaze.

But the plane landed safely at 5:49 pm (2249 GMT) and none of the reported 200 passengers was injured.

Delta said in a Twitter message that its Flight 30 returned to JFK after the pilot reported an "engine issue."

The carrier said the plane "landed safely" and that passengers were "being reaccommodated."

2nd Delta plane makes emergency landing

WASHINGTON: A Delta Air Lines plane en route to Los Angeles from Atlanta was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing due to engine problems, local television reported.

Fox5 News quoted aviation officials as saying Delta Flight 125, which took off from Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta around 6:10 pm Sunday (2310 GMT), had to turn back when one of the engines failed.

The tail of the Boeing 767 scraped the runway upon landing, but no injuries were reported, the TV station said.

The plane, which had 262 passengers aboard, reported issues with the air ducts to one of the engines, according to the report.

After the flight landed safely, all the passengers were put on another plane which continued without further delays to Los Angeles, Fox5 News said.

The incident marked the second emergency landing for a Delta Boeing 767 jet in one day.

Earlier, a Moscow-bound passenger plane with 204 people on board made an emergency landing back in New York after developing an engine problem shortly after takeoff, aviation officials said.

Since DL has B767s in its fleet that use both the General Electric CF6 and the Pratt and Whitney PW4000 engines, it depends on which engine type was involved. Not a Rolls-Royce this time!

Sounds like a really bad landing; I cannot imagine the geometry of scraping the tail unless the nose was way up or the plane almost landed on its side.

At least it is not blown out in the air type of trouble.
