Korean Air re-routed its flights 250 kilometres (160 miles) south of Ukraine from March 3 "due to the political unrest in the region", an official for the carrier told AFP.

This is hitting pretty close as I am booked for SQ 351. Never once paid attention to routing. I hope it becomes standard practice to avoid hostile airspace.

Yes, its probable that each aircraft would show up in each of their cockpit displays if they have TCAS ( Traffic Collision Avoidance System )selected to be displayed along with other data.

At the point in which MH was hit, and as the display refreshed, the flight number MH17 would just not show up. It would be assumed that the aircraft is out of range for TCAS to pick up.

Aircraft to aircraft voice communications is not practiced as this may confuse instructions from Air Traffic Control. The radio frequencies must always be selected to sync with ATC in that particular area.

It is easy for American carriers to avoid this area as they do not have many flights going for Europe to Asia. More specifically Europe to South Asia / Australia. Even for Korean / Japanese airlines, they should be flying a straighter path across Russia / China.

It was down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Believe this is nothing to do with frequency or number of flights. American is usually a "target" in many area. So it is not surprise to see that they avoid this flight path at all cost.

I assume English isn't your first language? You seem to have missed the point The poster was saying the FAA rule wouldn't have a big impact on operations of US airlines.
