  • Lion Air flight crashes into sea after taking off from Jakarta

JAKARTA: A Lion Air flight with 189 people on board crashed into the sea off Indonesia's island of Java, shortly after taking off from Jakarta on Monday morning (Oct 29), officials said.

A spokesman for Indonesia's search and rescue agency said that flight JT610 lost contact 13 minutes after takeoff, while en route to Pangkal Pinang on the island of Bangka, off the coast of Sumatra.

"It has been confirmed that it has crashed," the spokesman, Yusuf Latif, said by text message when asked about the fate of the plane, which air tracking service Flightradar 24 identified as a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

A tugboat leaving the capital's port had seen the craft falling, he added.

"The plane crashed into water about 30 to 40 metres deep," he told AFP. "We're still searching for the remains of the plane."

A total of 181 passengers – including two infants and one child – were on board the flight, the search and rescue agency said at a press conference. Two pilots and six crew members were also on board.

Thoughts and prayers for family and loved ones of the crash victims. Always sad when an accident like this happens, but it hits especially hard when it takes place so close to home.

I hope they find out the cause of the crash. Speculation (Sometimes credible, but often wild speculation) has already started on various aviation-related online forums including PPRuNe and Airliners.net).

Seems to be a leaked photo of the tech log.

This incident looks eerily similiar to the Adam Air crash some years back. If this defect reoccured back in the air, chances are his autopilot will trip. The only difference is this crew had daytime and thus, visual reference to their advantage. Only time would tell.

Boeing tells pilots how to deal with faulty sensors

Seems like faulty sensor is the cause:

Boeing has sent instructions to airlines using its 737 Max jet about how pilots should react to erroneous readings from sensors, an issue investigators believe was a key factor in the Lion Air crash in Indonesia, in which all 189 people on board were killed.

Aviation experts said the initial findings indicated that the the pilot and first officer of flight JT610 did not know at what speed they were flying, similar to the problem experienced on Air France flight 447, which plunged into the Atlantic sea in 2009.

Boeing said it had issued an operations manual bulletin, advising pilots on how to deal with “erroneous input from an angle of attack (AOA) sensor”. The Federal Aviation Administration, the US aviation regulator, said it would order airlines to abide by the bulletin and would take “further appropriate actions” depending on the result of the investigation.

Absolutely ridiculous, US pilots weren't told about the feature that caused the Lion crash.

What happened to the much flaunted Boeing's philosophy of pilot over automation and pilots always in control of their aircraft ?
I can imagine the attorneys at Boeing getting busy right now.

“We do not like the fact that a new system was put on the aircraft and wasn’t disclosed to anyone or put in the manuals,”

If this accusation is true that the information was not even in the manuals, then Boeing is going to face a huge backlash over it.
