Malaysian government to decide fate of major airline

The Malaysian government is considering whether to shut, sell or refinance national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAB), Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says.

The government was studying options for the national carrier, and a decision should be made "soon", Mahathir said today, when asked about analysts' suggestions the airline be shut down or spun off.

"It is a very serious matter to shut down the airline," Mahathir told a news conference at parliament.

"We will nevertheless be studying and investigating as to whether we should shut it down or we should sell it off or we should refinance it. All these things are open for the government to decide."

The airline has been trying to transform its operations and return to profitability by 2019 as it recovers from two disasters in 2014, when flight MH370 disappeared in what remains a mystery and flight MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

Sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd, which took MAB private in 2014, said the government needed to decide on its investment in, and level of support for, the struggling airline.

The fund also said that it was waiting for MAB to present a review of its business strategy.

I propose that SIA Group or Singapore Government to express their interest in purchasing the entire Malaysia Airlines Bhd, this will enable SIA to feed all East-West Malaysia traffic via Singapore and to cut MAS long haul routes and re-route them via Singapore, so that Singapore will become the biggest beneficiary as the whole country.

And you think Dr M or any other Malaysian politician would allow that to happen ? After all the recent politicking over water, sea boundaries and even nasi lemak.

      Malaysia Government to sell MH

“There are certain parties who are interested to buy (the airline), so we don’t reject (the possibility of selling),” Mahathir said, without disclosing the names of the firms.Although we hired foreign management, MAS still faced losses. Therefore, one of the options is to sell. I love MAS. I want MAS to be a national airline, but it looks like we cannot afford it,” the leader added."

All four bids have failed. The government will decide what to do next soon.

            Now there are 5:

... which may include AF-KLM taking a 49% stake and establishing MRO facilities in Malaysia, or JAL taking a 25% stake and starting up a "regional hub" there:
