  • Qantas CEO Alan Joyce gets pie in the face

This happened in Perth earlier today.

He returned to the podium to complete his speech, and even had the composure to joke about the incident afterwards.

The assailant was taken down by security staff at the scene. (No dramatic slap-down like Wendi Deng's save of Rupert Murdoch in 2011.)

The assailant is now to be charged and is around 65 years of age and a former farmer. His motivations were not in any way linked to aviation issues, or to business and competition, but rather his disagreement with Joyce's involvement in a letter to the government where 20 Australian CEOs called for marriage equality.

Ironic that one of the federal ministers most aligned with the assailant's views has already labelled him a disgrace.

Thanks for shedding some light on why the assailant did this, SQ228! As usual, most of the online and offline press reported the pie incident (Who doesn't like videos of pies in the face?), but not the aftermath...
