  • SQFG Samples Emirates..... and likes what she sees (MLE-CMB in F)

    Hello SQTalk......

I'm all for trying out other airlines, usually with the view in Mind that SQ's the benchmark for service. Very few airlines have come close, and in my mind - it's only CX, NH and possibly MH and TG on a good hair day.

So here was an opportunity for a shorthaul flight on EK (have not ridden them since 1999!) to see how they have moved on. MLE-CMB is only 1:30 on the schedule, and about 1:10 in reality. I'm curious to find out how "F" one can get in that short time.

My journey starts on Male Island itself. Ooh, MH already has A380's flying all these routes!

From the top of the Holiday Inn (which has a sensational rooftop bar - albeit a dry one), you can see the airport

As well as the playthings of the rich and famous...

My ride to the airport however, is nowhere near as glitzy

Something like this.... (note to self: Do not wear a dress when getting on this kind of boat next time)

    Pulling out from MLE's jetty

We're in a game of chicken with this fella.. (incidentally, our captain lost and backed off, putting us in this other boat's wake)

Bye bye Male! Till next time I feel like driving with my hands in the 2-10 position!

It's only 5 minutes to the airport, and I get some nice views of aeroplanes as we pull up to the Island.

The Airport's quiet at this time, but the nice Holiday inn gent escorts me to EK's check in counter anyway. I'm a little bit early for this - so no queues, and I'm given my lounge invite, BP's and off I go.

1A. I love this alphanumeric combination

Just about everyone uses the Finifenmaa Lounge (no new pic - so I took it from a previous trip)

It's nice enough for a short stay

Some windows with Tarmac views. A First Choice wingletted 767 keeps my ride company on this warm day.

Oh no, I've been found out...

LOL, thanks for that first pic in the address book - I've been meaning to make a trip back there to see that message for ages! Now I won't have to!

I see you didn't discover my previous scribbles... hoho...

              to continue

I love MLE airport. They let you snap away !

              Today, the bird used is a 777-300 A6-EMT It's configured I think 12F, 42J. Not sure how many Y

F uses Stair 1, J Stair 2 and Y Stair 3. This is pretty enforced. Makes me pretty much the only person to use the Front Stair

It's a long way up to a 777! Lucky all I have is a backpack

Welcome aboard. I'm greeted by a multinational crew - I have NO idea where they were from, but they were really nice.

2nd best seats in the house. The best ones are in the right of the frame.

                  Seat Features:

I guess I had to see it for myself: The famous Minibar in seat!

Seat Controller (you can basically run the seat from here) in stowed position

                  To adjust the position

A qwerty keyboard for texting if you so wanted

Massage function (this thing made a bit of noise, so i was embarassed to use it )

This seat DOES go flat, and I was wondering if you did so, would the window pax have a hard time getting out?

Answer is no, not really. Lots of room for that to happen

Even with the dividers down, it's still very private

We push back very much on time - and the american captain comes on to say flying time is 1 hour 10 minutes.

After takeoff I'm given a menu and wine list

And I also get the chance to check out their ICE (Information, Communication, Entertainment) system booklet. Very promising. There's a LOT of stuff in there.

We take off to stunning views of the Maldivian atolls - which I could not take properly cause it was all backlit

Rub a dub dub, what's for grub?

Ah, my 2nd favourite sparking non-alcoholic grape juice!

Which, I duly start with, alongside Atlanta's finest 2010 vintage and a bowl of nuts.

The ladies then come around and lay out the table (jeez it's big!)

With a nice embossing in the linen

                          Tuck in!

Interesting shape for the garlic bread, but SQ's is better. SQ 1, EK 0

                          The tartlet - Sensational.

I check out the ICE system, and there's a mind boggling array of items in it. I lost count of the sheer number of movies/music and others. There's also a choice of two outside view cameras - down and straight ahead. ICE 1, Krisworld 0, most other people - 1

Naturally I had this on: The forward facing one. Emirates Six-Five-Two cleared to land runway two two, wind two three zero at five.

                              They keep the camera running!

And we pull into the gate. This picture is titled "man-on-luggage-truck-doing-the-YMCA"
