  • Kempinski - Commune by the Great Wall - photos

    Hey all,

I stayed here last weekend touring Beijing.

We did three hotels in three nights

    1. Courtyard Marriott Beijing Northeast - more like a Marriott than a courtyard. Nice.

    2. Commune by the Great Wall Kempinski - see below

    3. Regent Beijing - great location (especially if you love high end cars), great hotel and free wifi

Anyway, the Commune is a fantastic place. 12 Asian designers each got a chance to design a home that's scattered in hills around the beginning of a section of the wall that's unrestored. It's quiet, it's very green, and it's a great hideaway. There's a hint of feeling you're in Europe frankly, not China.

You can either get a room in a chalet or get a proper house that takes on a large group. The homes are immaculate and some very ridiculously large. They had a couple of them open to visit while we were there.

There's a private hike through the forest that's about 20 minutes from getting you to the start of the wall. Absolutely no tourists are here which is a very important point to make. It was a lovely 28 degrees and sunny when we were there and the main sections where SWARMED with tourists and umbrellas (mostly from other parts of China) all grouped together. It appeared like you were in a market and not on the wall (we drove through an area and got a taste for how many people were visiting). When you access your own private bit, it's just amazing to have no one around you and being on such a remarkable piece of history.

Rooms are large, service was great, and food was good - although pricey as you can imagine considering there's no where else to go eat near by. Great for a one or two night stay!

We got our room on Agoda for $313 SGD for the night. Taxi will run about 450-500 RMB from/to the city one way.
