  • best J class to BKK

Looking to possibly book flights for a trade fair next October to BKK. I have looked at BA,AF,Ethiad,Thai + Swissair Int. All the prices arw not a m ile from each other and was wondering has anybody been on simualr flights to BKK and whon they felt was the best both for comfort and value - I am not looking at the lowest price but also dont want to pay crazy prices either - Do BA now have their new J for this flight?

    Many thanks

I have flown BA9/10 on the SYD-BKK vv segments and can confirm that BA operates a 744 with New Gen Club World config to BKK.

QF also plies the route btw, and prices are identical to BA's due to the JSA. BA does have the edge in hard product (180 degree beds vs angled flat), but IMO QF's catering and wine list are far superior. Service-wise, you'd generally not go wrong with QF or BA but QF operates this route with their London-based crew and these have been reported to be the best crew in the QF system (transfers to London are picked on merit from existing short haul/junior crew) and dare I add - the best I've ever experienced in the industry. You can even do one way QF and one way BA on your ticket - best of both worlds!

EDIT - Here's a trip report written by StarG on both QF and BA: http://www.sqtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5505

Personally I don't think BA CW seat is better than QF skybed. While BA is flat, it is also narrower (8 across!), and the new (not so new anymore) seat shakes and rattles whenever the person beside you moves, or the person behind you adjusts their footrest (or it collapses as it is prone to do). I prefer QF. If you're interested I have trip reports of both products, and on this route, on FT.

I've never flown the QF Skybed, but I quite like the BA NGCW seat upstairs (2+2) and I prefer it over the SQ Spacebed. Never had the problems that you described, although I've had problems with the older CW on the 777s and would avoid them.

Personally I've slept v well on both BA and QF (when BA doesn't overheat its cabins...). And personally I do prefer QF J on the whole. OTOH the vast majority of people I know do prefer the BA product to the QF one, on the basis of the hard product alone. These things can be subjective, hence I suggested the QF/BA combo.

Having said that I've flown neither BA nor QF on between LHR and BKK but have flown both airlines between LHR and SIN which I believe is an analogous sector to compare both carriers (identical product/similar flight duration and timing).

If you don't mind going to FRA and subject to D (IIRC) availability, you can pay around the LH price (and not that much more for F) on a QF fare to SIN routing via BKK on QF/BA/CX metal, e.g. I've flown the following in J:

                FRA-SIN - QF
                SIN-BKK - CX
BKK-LHR - QF on BA metal
                LHR-FRA

i.e. try both QF's Spacebed and BA's new seat and compare.

I'd buy LH and try to upgrade to F using UA SWUs.
Many SWUs are available on TOF.

IIRC UA SWUs are not upgradeable on Z fares (which I expect the LH fare mentioned above is booked into). OTOH M&M e-vouchers or mileage upgrade works.

UA Z fares are not upgradable, but LH Z fares are upgradable using a paper SWU.

At that price I would definitely take LH. The seat is by no means the best but the service is pretty good and the IFE Ok (AVOD but a limited choice).

Actually I do fine on both. Yes the BA NGCW is narrower but the QF Skysleeper is at a sloping angle. So both have their pros and cons. At the end of the day if given a choice, I would go with BA as I find their service slightly better than QF.

Hi, don't know where you got your fares, but I can get SWISS for € 1826 , or Scandinavian for € 2024 , Air France for € 1900, KLM for € 1896 , Finnair from UK for € 1782.

The cheapest from europe is actually from STOCKHOLM on Malaysia Airlines - which you have to find your own way there... € 1368 + tax !

One of the better airlines is QATAR AIRWAYS but departing from UK for around € 1645 + tax. QR's service and food is comparable to even SQ's.
