  • An increasingly worrying development in S. E. Asia

    Russian* Tourists....

Or rather, some of their gawdy outfits (colour match, anyone ?!) and 'behaviour'. In the last couple of years in Thailand and (currently) in Bali, the buggers are everywhere.

The Russian's are coming folks, and they're all wearing swimming trunks and illuminous colours....

*I suppose 'former Soviet block' would be a better descirption.

    'bloc' without the 'k'?

Plenty in Pattaya - there's a whole amusement park there with signs in Russian

And the entertainment scene there also with Russian 'entertainers'... quite odd the first time I saw it 3 years back!

Apparently their favorite destinations years ago were Greece, Cyprus, Egypt. Nowadays with the dollar going down in value, S.E. Asian destinations are becoming too popular.

I was in a 5-star hotel in Crete (city of Rethymnon), summer of 2005. Full of Russians. I asked my friend (who owned the hotel) and got the reply that all of them were not just rich, they were millionaires...

Saw few of them in HKG last summer. Yes, their outfit 'spoke' a lot. But, again, they are smart people and it's only the fact that a couple of generations have suffered from the regime, so it'll take them some years (or decades) to become less flashing or lavish on spending. I've heard about unbelievable stories of money spending on parties, jewelery, cars in modern Soviet Union, but again, what percentage of the population gets to do that? Less than .1%... (if not .01%)

        There's no pleasing some people

I'd rather them appear in their swimming trunks and illuminous colours...

        .. than with AK47s, T-72s and camoflaged

            Exactly

I don't think you can put all Russians into this category- that would be like claiming that all Germans wear Lederhosen or that all Scots play the bagpipes

It's just that people who don't act like this don't tend to get noticed for their lack of strange behaviour/dressing
Capslock is cruise control for cool... not!

See you at W:O:A 2010- rain or shine!
