    Part 01 Introduction

    Hello everybody!

Let me first start by wishing you all a very happy christmas and a wonderfull 2009! Let us hope for all the best and hassle-free travel

This will be my first TR on this forum, i have read with many joys and smiles other peoples' reports and threads. Instead of just being a leech i decided to contribute my part. As inspiration i would like to give the credit to CGK, JJPB3, SQ LPP, SQFLYERGIRL, KEITHMEL, MAN FLYER and many others

I hope my TR will be as charming and witty written as their posts.

This year's holiday was actually carefully planned with my family but due the voice of allegro25 sr. some additional plans were made as to grab more of the festive season. The constant planning and changing also drove my niece at the travel agency nuts! Credit to her that she managed to book everything!

Our plan was to meet up with family for christmas in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia. This idea got extended by a suggestion to grab new year in Japan. Ofcourse saying is easier then booking, so on a still sunny september morning i tried to price-comparison shop among tokyo, kyoto and osaka hotels during new year and found out that their rooms are then over the top priced!! 70.000yen = 600eur+ about average a night is a bit to steep for our budget but juggling with dates i found out that christmas in Japan is more affordable. Also avoiding a weekend when booking would reduce costs significantly as prices are higher, then during the week. We decided on flying into Osaka (KIX) and then go by train to Kyoto for christmas and then go to Indonsia for new year's celebrations. Tokyo will have to wait till another time.

The allegro25 family are avid SQ-fans, so naturally allegro25 sr. would prefer all legs on SQ. As he says: " there is no other way to fly then SQ (if Virgin Atlantic is unavailable)". Luckly Virgin does not fly everywhere we visit so we usually always travel SQ. YEAH!
    Why we like SQ?
    1) in business class they always address you by name.
    2) in economy class they make regular drinks and snack rounds on long-haul flights.
    3) the crew i have met are alwyas friendly, relaxed and willing to chat.
    4) the stopover in SIN is a welcome relief.
    5) i don't want to boast but i'm a very big eater (due to the gym) SQ-crew has always provided me with double or triple servings at mealtime, on KL i usually end up starved and bringing my own lunchbasket with me on the plane.
    6) it's the service that even other airlines talk about! EK F is great but it's SQ F that makes a true refined F experience. There is a sense of dignity and ellegance onboard and everything is serene in the lounge. (EK's ground services like complimentary transfers are a nice touch but their lounges in DXB look like a mobscene at a clearance sale!)
    7) once i travelled with grandma allegro25 in C, she was pampered and even escorted by 2 attandents everytime she needed to go to the toilets. I like the way they treat and help the elderly, .

Booking SQ on their website usually is easy and straightforward but with travel during the holidayseason the ticket prices they give out are usually in the highest booking class. AMS-SIN-KIX-SIN-AMS was orginally 9000+eur in Business class on their website. Luckily my niece working at the travel agency found a more managable fare of 6000eur using Worldspan. It seems during such a busy period SQ has the knack of letting people book the highest booking class available to ensure guarenteed (high revenue)PAX travel on those flights or the other idea was that the flights were almost full and only the most expensive seats were left.

The seperated journey to Yogyakarta was orginally planned as SIN-SOC-SIN on MI with onwards a private car to YOG but unfortunatly MI flies only 3x a week. It involved some shuffling around with dates of hotelstays and such, so we scrapped that part and instead settled for SIN-CGK-SIN. We will fly Y because it is only an 1 hr flight and it's nice to sit in the back for a change! The CGK-YOG-CGK will be flown on GA. Other family will still fly in via SOC but on other dates. I'm kinda excited what to expect on GA, according to allegro25 sr. we might fly back to NL in a coffin due to GA he's kinda spooked because GA is on the EU banned list for bad aircraft maintanance.

So our schedule was booked and confirmed as followed:

We have booked also several BTC items, i forgot the selcetions for allegro25 sr. but for me:
    1) AMS - SIN seafood special meal (to try out)
    2) SIN - KIX gyu-don (hope it is coupled with the Hanagoyomi set)
    3) SIN - AMS lobster thermidore

I will try and post every segment as soon as possible, if you need anything specifically photographed or reviewed just let me know!
Here is a list of attention points i made (with credit to other writer's threads):

    - legroom shots
    - presentation of logo on dishware, glasses towards the PAX
    - the hot towel service
    - the warmth of nuts at the appetiser drink
    - the fierceness of the lounge dragon
    - roboticness of service
    - menu cards
    - lounge offerings
    - smiles
    - SKL lounge ambiance
    - boarding call procedures
    - dom perignon / krug (some people on this forum are really addicted to these bubbles )

Only 2 days to go till travel! I'm thinking or actually dastardly planning to start my drinks with pre-take off champers, an appetising Singapore Sling or a Silver Kris Sling to set the mood before mealservice. Then pick red of white wine according to the menu, port for the cheese platter and then settle with a coffee royal with bailey's. At least i'll snooze better on the Spacebed then!

    Online Check-in (it works!)

    PART 1A

While i was typing above post, i suddenly realized that online check-in was open 48hrs in advance of flight. I logged in using the e-tix code and got the AMS-SIN sector, pre-selected seats were 16DF as requested by the travelagent! If the seat requests went right i hope the BTC request will also turn out well.

Here is the image of online seat selection:

    Check-in online requires:
name, family name, date of birth
nationality, expire date of passport, passportnumber
    frequentflyer programme and number

(i noticed with EK, FFP number get printed on the boarding pass if you check-in online, will check in AMS when i get the boardingpasses, i prefer SQ-issued instead of own stale printing paper!)

Your TR's off to a great start, Allegro25. I don't recall reading many TRs covering the AMS-SIN route so that alone promises to be a good read.

(OT: Looks like SQT will have bumper crop of interesting TRs with which to close 2008 and open 2009. Awesome. )

Thanks Allegro25 for giving us a running commentary of your trip.

Just a thought, you've chosen primarily 16C/H which in my opinion is way too close to the toilets and often pax will use your seats as for hand support. But of course, its your choice.

Looking forward to your TR, Allegro25! I hope you will take picture of that hotel. I stayed there just after the earthquake in May 2006. It had cracks in the wall and only one elevator was working. But at least it was opened and in working order otherwise. Though not all floors could be used. Many rescue workers were staying there.

We will be staying 4 nights at Melia, i have had family staying there before. They phoned that they renovated a great deal; breakfast room, gym, swimming pool are as nice again as they were. I'll be sure to post some pictures, we are staying at their grand rooms.

The choice is actually deliberate for row 16 (or any last row of the cabin).
I personally like to see over the seats into the cabin as that gives me a wide and airy feel. Also i like to take candid pictures and the last row is strategicly located as to not disturb other (grouchy) PAX. I usually sit at the window for viewing and picture taking and when in the skies i switch with allegro25 sr. so that he can sleep undisturbed away from the aisle and i'll sit specifically at the aisle seat to enjoy the service etc. Allegro25 sr. actually threathens to strangle me (family bluff and tease) if i book him in any middle seat in any class. Haha, usually my mom or I are the ones who "involuntary" sit in the middle seat but for a short flight or when travelling with other family sitting next to you then that's okay.

Row 16 is also close to the toilets, generally speaking i usually hate to wait at the toilet, in Y there is usually an awkward silence if people from all directions wait in the coridor to use the toilet. It's difficult to smile while you need to pee badly. I find it easy to watch from my seat to see if they are free or if the FA has just cleaned the toilet, meaning everything is fresh and crisp again ready to be used!

I guess the festive season brings most people to travel all at once, luckly i can share my experience with all of you. I only do hope that SKL T3 in SIN won't be overcrowded. I sometimes feel awkward making pictures whilest dodging the angry or disgusted look of business men in the lounge. By the way as you see from online check-in only 4 out of 30 business seats are still available meaning a nearly full flight to SIN.

you're the expert on things SQ and i enjoyed your posts, i just hope my postings will be of some value to you, thanks for the inspiration!

Oh wow, yet another biggie! I am very much looking forward to your trip report! And concerning your sources of inspiration: with those guys' reports in hindsight, I am certain that your report will be a blast - you've been inspired by only the crème de la crème of trip report writers there

Have a great trip from Amsterdam and please do take some shots from the AMS SKL! When I was in Amsterdam last time, it already closed down when I came. Would love to see what I've been missing out on...

You're staying at the Gran Melia in Jakarta, right? I've stayed there when I was about 12 years old or so ... great hotel, I really loved it there!

Enjoy your travels and have a safe trip!

Also don't worry about GA so much, nowadays they are better in terms of aircraft maintenance.

Unfortunately it is the best of the worst so either you take GA, or you drive from CGK (higher risk) or you take the train (not so comfortable)...

Playing it down like a pro ... you also inspired me (thanks!) and look what came out: yet another unfinished TR I need to finish up as soon as MacBook Pro returns from service. haha.

Only 13 hrs left till departure!

Just a quick message to say that i can't sleep from anxiety......
I'm just looking so much forward to this journey!

                              Here some replies to:

I'll be sure to check and note the opening times of AMS SKL, i will make lots of pictures so that you'll be informed! Actually i'm staying in Yogyakarta's Melia Purosani, i'm just transfering from SQ to GA in CGK. No more time actually to grab some time over there.

The thing is, because GA is on the EU banned list, if you get into an accident or fatalitywhile flying on GA, european insurance companies are not willing to compensate you. Their argument is that the EU told you that it's dangerous so you're flying at your own risk. Officially travelagents in NL must recommend customers to fly on certified foreign carries into Indonesia. CX, MH, SQ, KL, LH, EK is what my niece from the travelagency usually recommends for her customers wishing to fly to CGK or DPS whilest following the EU guidelines.

I could only hope to aspire to write TR at your level! I must say you have given my some insights on how F works or should work, my only F-experience is on EK so am a bit limited in my scope there.

                              9V-SIA
I'm glad you are fond of the Hyatt regency Kyoto, if you can recommend it then it must be really good! We picked this hotel because of the price value, the free gym, the temple and museum next door. We have the "explore package" that holds B&B, check out at 14.00hrs, temple tickets and a seasonal amenity.

Our destination is the Arashiyama light up on saturday and sunday's fleamarket at Toji-temple. Other things to see a kurama&kibune and fushimi inari temple.
