  • Booking flights on old passport, travelling on new passport (UK)

As the title suggests, I'm in the position where my (UK) passport needs to be renewed/replaced - whilst it's not completely falling apart, it's a tad battered so I think I'll have to go down the replacement route. I'm presuming that this will result in a new passport number.

My query is, if I book flights now (awards with LH, SQ and some paid tix with TG and either UA or EK), then get my new passport with a new number (i.e. different to that on the booking), will this cause me any problems? I know a similar situation about credit card numbers was discussed not too long ago, but unsure of the best way to proceed with a passport change.

I'm sure that many of you out there who travel a heck of a lot more frequently than I do () must've come across this at some point - any advice would be most appreciated!

I was in a similar situation when I misplaced my UK passport, discovered the loss the night before my SQ flight (hadn't been travelling for work the previous week, so I hadn't needed my passport), and had to travel with my Philippine passport.

I think the important thing is for the names on the documents to match. I had no problem when I explained to the checkin agent why I had a different passport from what was in the booking. (I had the credit card I used for the ticket and my FF card as backup IDs.)

Won't you be able to keep the old passport as backup?

Thanks jjpb3, I'm hoping that my name as you suggest is the important thing. I'm presuming that the passport office will send my old one back alongside the new one? Both for the purposes of backup ID as you say, but also for posterity!

I am doing this all the time and have never had a problem. I have two UK passports I put one number in against my booking but choose much nearer the time which one I will actually use. Normally based on which one I think will give me easier access to the country due to the other stamps in it. I have never had a problem. Just tell the check in person that you have changed passports and they will put in the new number.

On a recent trio to Cairo I left Israel on one passport but becsue I did not want an Eygptian stamp in that passport I swaped over passports and arrived in Cairo on my other passport. The only problem was that I forgot when filling in the landing card and put down the passport number of the passport I left Israel on rather than the one I arrived on in Cairo. But even this was not a problem.

Many thanks Lobster - one of my many worries concerning pulling everything together for our redemption trip has now been ticked off

I got a shock, however, on seeing that a renewal/replacement passport costs £72

As everyone said, there will be no problem if the name is the same.
Once you get the new passport, you can call the airlines to update the booking with your new passport number as well as the new expiry date.
