  • The Whipped Cream Waltz in VIE DO! [27-28 Sept 2008]

    Viennese autumn times

So this is supposed to be the official VIE DO thread. I humbly thank phaleesy for coming up with the splendid idea to visit one of Europe's most beautiful cities and I am proud to be your host / one of your hosts for your stay here! We still got plenty of time to organize everything but to give you a brief impression of what to expect, I whipped up some images I found suitable for proper representation with my notorious photoshop skills

... but let's start with the important things:

    Who and where ....

    Time and place
Location: Vienna / Austria / Europe
    Time: 27 to 28 September 2008

    Getting there
There are various ways to fly into VIE. VIE is not served very well by international carriers but one could take one of these airlines:

China Airlines from Taipei via Abu Dhabi
EVA Air from Taipei via Bangkok
    Emirates directly from Dubai
    Qatar Airways directly from Doha

As Vienna is a major hub for Central- and Eastern Europe, it's actually quite easy to reach VIE from any place in Europe (maybe Portugal might be the exception):

Austrian Airlines from nearly anywhere in Europe
Lufthansa from Frankfurt, Munich and other German cities
    SWISS from Zurich and Geneva
    British Airways from London Heathrow
    Air France from Paris
    KLM from Amsterdam

And of course our local heroes and LCC's:

Niki and Sky Europe might be your choice when traveling on a budget.

    Accomodation
There are plenty of options you can choose from in Vienna, regardless of a more young and hip style or residing like an emperor. The most commonly recommended places are of course the most expensive ones:

    Hotel Imperial (Starwood - SPG)
    Hotel Bristol (Starwood - SPG)
Le Meridien Wien (Starwood - SPG)
    The Ring (JJW Hotels)
    Grand Hotel (JJW Hotels)
Hilton Vienna Plaza Hotel (Hilton - HHonors)
    Hilton Vienna (Hilton - HHonors)
Marriott Vienna (Marriott - Marriot Rewards)
    Hotel Sacher

and of course a lot of other hotels. When looking for a good place to stay, it's not that important to get something central as the inner city is reachable in 20-30 minutes by subway anyway. However, it might be most convenient to stay in the central district (postal code 1010). Concerning the Hilton Vienna: if you consider staying there, keep in mind that the location is not as good because of the proximity to the central park as it can get creepy there at nighttime. Same thing applies for the Marriott.

There are of course other, cheaper, hotels as well to consider like Holiday Inn's. If you need specific info for a certain hotel, please let me know and I check it out myself.

You might check out Hotel Ananas which is right around the corner from where i live. It's actually quite nice and not too expensive!

And now to the fun part:

There's following places that came into my mind when thinking of nice places to visit:

    - St. Stephen's cathedral (Stephansdom)
    - Maria Theresia's winter residence: Castle Schönbrunn
    - The inner city tour with the parliament, city hall, the uni, ...
    - Prince Eugene of Savoy's summer residence: The Belvedere
    - Museums

For those of you who are interested in classical music, I will check out the opera house and the Musikverein in the next few days and ask for some basic information I can share with you (booking tickets, program, etc.)

I'd have following options for you:

    a) we could just get food at standard restaurants.
    - Figlmüller's: they serve the world's largest Schnitzel, something mandatory in Vienna :-)
    - Plachutta: one of Vienna's finest cuisines. They are famous for their unique Tafelspitz.
    - DO & CO: you probably know them already anyway. Cartering the food for Austrian Airlines, they made themselves quite a big name.
    - Indochine: the place you go if you don't want to eat western. This is Vienna's finest Chinese restaurant.

    b) we could also go to a Heuriger. It's actually best if you have a look at following websites to get a feeling on what to expect:
    Heuriger Fuhrgassl-Huber
    Weingut Christ
    Heuriger Wolff
    Heuriger Zahel

A stay in Vienna is not complete without taking it slow and talk over a cup of coffee. There are several coffee houses one might want to check out:

    K&K Hofzuckerbäckerei Demel 1010, Kohlmarkt 14
Konditorei Oberlaa Stadthaus 1010, Neuer Markt 16
    Café Sacher 1010, Philharmonikerstraße 4
    Café Landtmann 1010, Dr. Karl-Lueger-Ring 4
Café Sperl 1060, Gumpendorfer Straße 11
    Café Central 1010, Herrengasse 14
    Café Stein 1090, Währigerstraße 6-8
    Café Hawelka 1010, Dorotheergasse 6
    Café Griensteidl 1010, Michaelaplatz 2
    Café de l'Europe 1010, Graben 31
    Café Dommayer 1130 Auhofstraße 2

Of course there are a variety of coffeehouses that also serve cakes and torts. Just let the teaser picture speak for itself ...

So the main purpose of this brief introduction is to get you to Vienna. We are really looking forward to meeting you all and showing you around.

I will constantly update this post with new information and so ...

        Vienna? How quaint.

Too early to tell but a weekend in VIE with such wonderful people does sound appealing and I can try out Austrian Airlines.

Put me down as a maybe!

Austrian Airlines is actually quite nice if you fly Business Class. The food is really really good (DO & CO). && put you on the maybe list

Flo - Thank you so much for agreeing to host. I have no doubt you'd whip up a superb Do.

I took the liberty of jazzing up the thread title a little, taking a cue from the original thread. Hope you don't mind.

Flo, your invite page is AWESOME!

Makes me want to go back to VIE; been there twice previously and love it! Sadly I'm committed to the F1 GP in SIN that weekend already

Oh, oh... pity I can't be in 2 places at once. Looking forward to future opportunities to catch up though.

I might come back to your suggestion hehe

Ah and I'm eagerly checking out coffee and cake places. Had a great Esterházy Cake at Café Zimtschnecke (which is near-ish the Schönbrunn castle) today. The hot chocolate (I ordered a Melange café, though) was so-so :/
