  • Le Méridien N'Fis - Marrakech

Marrakech (RAK) in Morocco is just over 3 hours flying time from LHR - quite exciting for me that in such a short time I'm in North Africa! I took GB Airways (originally founded as Gibraltar Airways) which until the end of March operates as a BA franchisee (so BA logo, uniforms etc) but after having been bought by easyJet, will then fly as easyJet.

A taxi from the airport (Menara) to the Le Méridien N'Fis cost me 100 dirhams (about EUR 10) and like certain countries, it's something which you should establish in advance before you depart (after perhaps some haggling). Some of the rest of the group (a Do) paid 150 dirhams. The journey itself was quite quick and only seemed to take around 15-20 minutes.

Like most LM, the hotel is not luxurious by any means. It's located just outside the Medina (old town) - which means that it's cheaper than those inside the old town - and it's a short distance to one of the gates around the city wall. A taxi to (for example) the main square inside the old town takes around 5 minutes and cost (me at least) 40 dirhams.

I was offered a small cup of sweet mint tea on arrival whilst checking-in. They had the usual SPG PLT amenities - 500 points, wine, a minibar credit and a local gift (but they couldn't tell me what it is!). The girl who checked me in was friendly and chatty, e.g. she seemed disappointed that I'm only staying 1 night in Marrakech and jokingly made me promise to come back again and for longer!

No suite (I didn't ask) and I just got what seems to be a normal room on the SPG (the top - 3rd) floor:

I went out and found this delivered to my room whilst I was out:

(a bottle of water, fruits, nuts, dried fruits and Moroccan pastries together with a letter from the GM). Another member of the group (not SPG PLT) received fruit and a bottle of wine ?

The room rate which I booked (spg.com) comes with free (US style buffet) breakfast, free wifi Internet and free use of the hotel hammam (a public bath ).

(This morning was an example of why I sometimes love LHR! (Usually when departing though.) A taxi ride zooming around the M25 orbital motorway to LHR (about 35 mins - but this was at 6am so no traffic jams unlike during peak hours!), self-service check-in (I was hand luggage only) and zone R security in T1 (with only 1 pax in front). A total of about 40 minutes from stepping out of my front door to sitting down with a warm bacon baguette and OJ (unlike certain SQTalkers, I'm not too keen on champagne for breakfast although most of the J pax on the GB flight seemed to be doing exactly that...) in the BA lounge! )
