From my experience, I can highly recommend the Grand Hyatt... for location (just next to Taipei 101, restaurants cafés within walking distance...), superb level of service and great modern facilities (24hr fitness, nice poolarea with somewhat smallish pool though...) not to forget a decent, lively bar/lounge Ziga Zaga... busy and always good for a drink

The hotel can get crowded though, so if you're looking for something more quiet, it's definitely not the right choice...

hi sqfan- glad to hear you will be coming to taipei. I will be in town until the 7th as well, and would be glad to meet up at your convenience. As for accomodations- true, the hyatt is nice, but like was mentioned earlier, it is extremely busy. the far eastern is still close to the taipei city hall area, while providing a much more quiet refuge. if you're in town on business, and your meetings are further from that area, the formosa regent hotel is a great choice, both because of its luxurious accomodations, great service, and wonderful shopping. let me know if you need any further help and i will be glad to assist.

SQOZflyer and taipeiflyer, much appreciated for your tips.

Nah, I am there on sightseeing holiday (flying visit) and am still researching. Surprisingly, there is not as much info as one expect on the web. Currently perusing my copy of somehwta outdated Lonely planet.

          Any comments on Sheraton Taipei?

Most probably, I'll get a room at Hyatt, which I believe is close to most sightseeing places.

..and the biggest shock is the distance from the TPE to city centre and I'm not looking forward to my return flight which departs at 0700hrs. Definitely a red-eye...

let the crew know where you will be staying... just kinda bring it up casually...you might be able to sneak a ride in the SQ bus. =)

Guys, do becareful what you post as we don't want our FA's to be stalked by nutters/sickos out there who so happen to read our board.

I like my SQ but seriously, we need to draw the line somewhere for responsible behaviour.

There was a similar issue on TOF last year. Anyway, I was asking because I am new to SPG and wondering if I should bank more hotel stays with them.

sorry sqfan- i didn't consider that. the crews have always been so casual in mentioning where they stay that i figured it was fairly common knowledge. moderator, feel free to delete my earlier post as i dont want to compromise anyone's safety.

                        No apologies needed, taipeiflyer.

Good news: Hotel now booked - found great rate.

BTW, is there an open air part to the Taipei 101 or is it completely enclosed? Wondering if it's like Empire State building? Thinking about visiting it at night but if enclosed, the glass might cause reflection issues.

..and Mitsukoshi : Does it have a basement food court like the one in Tokyo? Any chance of some Unagi or Fauchon (I know - wrong country) ?

So far, I think a visit to the Lungshan Temple and National Museum is in order. Still considering the Aviation Museum - seen some pics on the internet...however waiting for the website link to work.

Hi SQFAN, there is an open part to Taipei 101. It is two stories above the regular observatory and costs an extra 100 NT to access, but it is only enclosed by metal bars, which a camera can easily fit thru, in order to get an unobstructed view of the taipei skyline. the mitsukoshi dept. stores do have basement food courts. i am not sure whether Fauchon is there, but I know you can get unagi. Mitsukoshi is about a 5-min walk from 101. The National Palace Museum is definitely a must- it really is incredible. Danshui, Wulai, and Yang-ming Mountain are also really nice places which can be accessed with relative ease by mrt and bus. Shilin night market is the best night market in taipei, and is right off the red line. any other advice, just ask =)

taipeiflyer, apologies ..in the midst of work, I barely remembered to PM you. You have new gmail.

I'll think of more places to visit while in the air. He he he..as they say in the UK, I'm winging it since I am normally a meticulous planner for my unescorted holidays.

Hoe you had a good flight there to LAX and you should be due back to TPE.
