  • Study: Changi Airport, SIA facing more flight delays

Changi Airport's performance slipped from 83.5 per cent last year to 81.3 per cent this year, while SIA fell from 85.2 per cent to 84.5 per cent.

Meanwhile, Jetstar had 86.4 per cent of all flights arriving on time. Its performance was not captured in last year's survey.

Despite its poorer performance, Changi beat all other major Asian airports, including Hong Kong International Airport, Incheon Airport in South Korea and Dubai International Airport, which all reported fewer than 70 per cent of flights arriving and departing on time.

I think Changi should speed up its construction of the third runway or else SQ on time performance will continue to fall.

But I am glad at least it is better than HKG.

However also note that HK, Dubai and even Bangkok have more aircraft arivvals and departures than Changi

And HK probably has more flights to China main cities where airports and airspace can be rather constricted at times, resulting in massive delays.

I was under the impression that the 3rd runway is right smack in the middle of T5. So until T5 is ready, it's unlikely we can't use the 3rd runway... May be wrong though.

I wonder if the survey takes into account weather-related delays, which definitely plague HKG way more than SIN.

Third Runway (02R/20L) is to the east of T5. There should be taxiways in the midst of T5 construction linking the third runway to the existing T1-4.

There were massive delays yesterday afternoon. KB500, CX713, SQ975, BA11 (in that order) all circled around the sea to the south of Tioman, then again over Senai Airport, before doing their final approach to 20C/20R. Flight times were stretched by as much as 40 minutes.

and at least 2 flights were diverted.

CA403 (CTU-SIN) was diverted to KUL and TG413 (BKK-SIN) was diverted to BTH.

Any idea why? Weather was fine yesterday in the late afternoon along the East Coast of Singapore.

I was doing my usual evening run along East Coast Park and saw various aircraft landing, including JL37 (772) arriving in SIN from Haneda at about 6.30pm, about an hour later than scheduled.

No idea, Boss. I'm puzzled too. Poor SQ975 (the infamous 9V-SRL) came in at 4:05pm (scheduled arrival time was 3:40pm) and had to be quickly unloaded, cleaned, inspected and reloaded for its 5:30pm departure as SQ982.

TG413 made 2 missed approaches before diverting to Batam. Quite a number of aborted landings by other aircraft as well. Strong crosswinds maybe?

Don't think Singapore has winds that exceed the maximum certified for modern jet aircraft. Missed approaches in Changi are usually due to windshear and runway occupied by an arrival aircraft.

If this is runwy issue, then the delay should not be limited to SQ only.
Believe is other issue including use of aircraft type, airport management.

I hitched a Scoot pilot to work this morning. He confirmed that delays at Changi are commonplace. Apparently, things are much more efficient at Heathrow, which also has two runways but sees a lot more air traffic. The management of takeoffs and landings is handled efficiently, the airspace is tightly-controlled and delays are rare. Sadly, the air traffic control methodology here has a long way to go.

Indeed it is remarkable to reflect that in 2016, LHR had 473,231 aircraft movements compared to SIN's 360,500 (rounded presumably). That's a very significant 31% over SIN. LHR's two runways are 3.6 and 3.9km in length while SIN's are both 4km.

I'm curious as to the reasons why SIN can't match LHR. Higher bad weather days?
