  • PPS Event Impressions: "Transformers: The Last Knight" Movie Screening and Reception

I've always wondered what kind of perks a PPS member gets, especially those based in Singapore. I'm not referring to travel perks like priority check-in/boarding, lounge access etc, but non-travel perks like special events etc.

As a traveller who flies mainly in economy, PPS is essentially out of reach. Frequent travellers on SQ Y can qualify for Krisflyer Gold, equivalent to Star Gold, which does give you useful travel benefits on SQ and Star Alliance carriers that make frequent travel more tolerable. Which is all good, but forgive me if I still get occasional bouts of PPS envy...

I was recently given a "peek through the curtain" of PPS benefits by my good friend, who is also a frequent traveller, and someone who, together with his globe-trotting spouse, has enjoyed the benefits of (Solitaire) PPS membership for years and years...

PPS members get their own magazine, "Priority", a slick publication with lifestyle and travel articles...

I browsed one issue recently, and it highlighted some of the events organised for PPS members during the year...

...which included a "junior cabin crew experience" for young members, a wine masterclass, and a flight simulator experience.

    How cool is that?

Other events organised throught the year by PPS club organisers included movie screenings, and last month, in late June, I tagged along with my friend for one of them, "Transformers : The Last Knight", at GV Great World City...

The event consisted of a buffet dinner reception at GV Great World City, followed by a movie screening in a theatre block-booked by SQ.

The registration counter outside the theatre, complete with Singapore Girl cardboard cut-out...

A section of the public area at GV was cordoned off for the private reception, where guests were wined and dined in SQ fashion...

A look around the room gave me the impression that those attending were a little older than I would have expected, given the target audience for Transformers' movies, but I figured that was probably reflective of the age profile of PPS members...

A decent buffet spread was catered, comprising both Asian and Western selections...

...and highlights included very tasty made-to-order Laksa, served in full size portions, rather than the tiny bowls you get in SQ's airport lounges...

        The dessert selection...

...which included Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream with toppings...

PPS staff were on hand, and we chatted with some of the PPS staff who were present at the event...this was the team that organised the event, just one of many they arranged for PPS members.

This was the 2nd screening of the Transformers movie that they had organised, and the earlier one had an even larger crowd attending.

"Why not organise one for the Wonder Woman movie?" I asked one of the PPS staff...the pretty young lady smiled and said she wasn't sure if they were planning one.

"Have you heard of the website SQTalk?" my friend asked another staff member, as they handed out goodie bags for each guest....

Yes, she had heard of SQTalk, but no she wasn't a regular reader...

Each member received a goodie bag with snacks and souvenirs, including a model SQ plane...

And before the movie in a large and comfortable auditorium...a few SQ ads were screened....

Overall, this was a well organised event...nice food and then a movie in a state-of-the-art auditorium...

And the movie? Let's just say the first Transformer's movie was great, and then the sequels went downhill from there. While the special effects in this latest sequel were spectacular, as a movie I thought it was just too much, too fast, and too long. But that's not SIA's fault, is it?

I came away quite satisfied and happy with how the evening went, and very grateful to my friend for the invitation to attend.

And this was just one of many events SIA's PPS team organised for their members. This was probably just the tip of the iceberg, with many other events and activities organised for PPS members throughout the year.

While you could say that these events have little to do with the air travel experience, I think gestures like these, even a simple reception and movie screening, would go a long way to make members feel appreciated, and dare I use the L word...feel more loyal...

            Thanks for reading!

Is the movie screening event for free? I know the wine masterclass and flight simulator cost a large amount of mileage.

How come no such event in Indonesia...

I don't know if there was any cost involved, as I was there as a guest of my friend...I think PPS members would expect a movie screening to be provided on a free-of-cost basis, as a members' incentive.

That makes sense, given the type of activity...

That would be a question for SQ to answer

It's free. The invites aren't very regular though. Maybe one a year?

Yup its random ... not sure how they pick? year before last 1, last year I had 2 - this year none

So it very random and not a firm thing.

Surely SQ has some algorithm to decide who gets invited to these events. I cannot believe a company like SQ would do anything at random, let alone the selection of PPS members for loyalty events.

I'm sure they do, but my experience is the same as Alian's. So for all intents and purposes it appears random to us

What I suspect is that they'd invite the LPPS, TPPS and longer-term QPPS first, then in batches, as they receive RSVPs, start sending out invites to the leftover space to the newer QPPS members. We could start a thread and compare status vs date of invites if you need a more scientific way about this

I'm TPPS and my experience has been the same.

Ok...they have limited numbers of places for these events, so it makes sense to send the invites in waves based on response rates...
