  • Has anyone used KrisWorld's built-in business software?

In light of recent laptop bans plus the increasing allure of traveling light (I.e., without a laptop), I was reminded of SQ's promotion, around 2007, of their built in software capabilities. Further details:

    http://www.networkworld.com/article/...very-seat.html

KrisWorld can also be used as a PC and includes Sun Microsystems Inc.'s StarOffice application suite, which offers a word processor, spreadsheet, and a presentation program. Every seat is fitted with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port that lets passengers access documents carried on a thumb drive or portable hard disk. The port can also be used to connect a USB keyboard or mouse, making it easier for business travellers to create and edit documents without having to dig out their laptops and power cords, Tong said.

Don't want to carry a keyboard with you? No problem. You can buy one on board the aircraft. Alternatively, the handsets installed in each seat that offered controls for the in-flight entertainment system on one side and a phone on the other, have been replaced with a model that offers user controls on one side a QWERTY keypad on the other.
I was curious, can anyone answer:
    • Have any of you used the word processing, presentation, or spreadsheet software?
    • Was it easy to edit, access, and save those files onto a USB drive?
    • Promotional videos and that article suggests that a USB keyboard can be attached, has anyone been able to successfully do this?
    • Does the new generation of KrisWorld in the latest cabin product have the same features?

I love this idea, it reminds me of how convenient Google docs is (or at least when it doesn't force one to refresh the browser constantly). However, I noticed that SQ deemphasized this capability – for instance the software is mentioned at 0:38 in this promotional video:

Yet the same video posted at Singapore Airlines' official YouTube channel edits out the mention of the software!

I've attempted to connect my laptop and phone once into the system. Never had luck for me. I know this video, I've seen it before.

Ah, well. I just did a search of the SQ website and not found anything about business software. Maybe it's been dropped. If so, bummer...still I give SQ plaudits for attempting innovation.

On my 77WN trips, I did not see anything like the ones they have on the 2006 77W product and A330. Even if I connect my iPhone, it'll charge, no problem, but it won't load any media content (not that I need to see it from there that bad anyway).

I don't think the functionality being referred to here has anything to do with plugging in a device that has its own operating system. It is rather indicating that by inserting a USB memory device, that Krisworld should recognise that device, allow access to the files on it and support the editing thereof with standard office applications or the creation of new files. It's not offering networking capability or iTunes functionality etc.

You could connect a smartphone via HDMI on the 2013 IFE and use a Keyboard and Mouse with that? Although the bit permanent exit button in the way is a pain!

This sounds interesting but I've tried (on the 2006 system) with both my hard-disk and FAT32 USB and they didn't work.

Now I'm working if the HDMI port will work if I plug in a compute stick and if the handsets can he used to navigate the folders n whatnot in the compute stick.

The handset can't be used to navigate, you will have to use something else.

The HDMI worked fine with my 2017 MacBook Pro. Sound and everything. The big issue was the big exit button in the top left of the screen.

Sorry to go a little off topic here because I'm not sure where to post this. It has been a while since I flew SQ , may I know if the entertainment system's content on the 2006 products is the same as the 2013 products? Or if there is any difference what is it?

The movie/television content is the same. I just flew 2013 followed by 2006 yesterday so I'm quite sure of that (aside from some subtitle options). My assumption is the same for music but I didn't go through music so I can't say for sure.

The big differences are flight information and games. Touch screen capability opens up a whole new world for games, so expect a much better and broader offering.

There may be other differences I haven't noticed.

FYI: There is no touch screen in J though.

I hadn't thought of that! I'm guessing it's too large or not close enough?

Does J have the iPod style controller to provide the extra selection functions? I'm thinking of the trivia game where with no touchscreen it would be hard to respond.

We have 70 inch touch screens at work and I think it is close enough so im not sure of the reasons.

J does have the iPod connector. I haven't used it though, nor have I used them on the A330.
