  • An Old SQ Ticket

Been clearing some old files and came across this old ticket from 1983 belonging to my late dad. How many of us remember those days when we booked our tickets from travel agents and peel off coupons for each segment?

A return F tix to Tokyo cost SGD3942 then.

Haven't seen one of those in years! Just on a side note, it seems to state JL as the carrier and not SQ. If I am not mistaken JL719 use to be the HND-SIN route.
God must have been a ship owner, he placed the raw materials far from where they are needed and covered two-thirds of the earth with water...

Looks like it's SQ12 from Singapore to Tokyo, and JL719 from Tokyo to Singapore.

Wow, cool history. Also keep in mind that F class in 1983 is not even comparable to current C class which costs significantly less.

Wow. Memory lane. This ticket has a few details that give us a glimpse into what tickets were like then.

This fare looks pretty much like full fare 1 year ticket - and issued on SQ Stock 27 Sept 1983 for travel beginning 3 Oct 83, with an NVA of 3 Oct 84.

Not sure why - i think the form of payment (usually filled with invagt - Invoice agent) is mixed up with what should be the endorsements box (where you'd put the "nonref" remark in), and it's also strange that it's non-refundable.

Wow, thanks for some nostalgia! I remember seeing my parents use them regularly in that era, and for years after that. I don't remember any of ours being valid for a full year, but maybe we did in fact have at least one.

I also now remember pneumatic headsets, distinctly different cabin decor than today, and a smoking section.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, SQ12 was operated by either a 747-200 or 747-300 (I know that it was flown only by the latter in the late 80s and early 90s, but not sure about '83), and JL flights to SIN were operated by 742s and DC10s.

Yeah, the old time. Some refundable tickets were marked as nonref due to commission rebates. i.e. You paid less than face value of the published fare ticket and cannot get a full refund directly from airlines.

Also the large screen on the wall where we shared the very same movie, with a comedy movie we laughed together

I'm not sure if our tickets were refundable then, but there was no penalty for no-show and we could switch airlines even though we bought tickets for SQ.

I was pretty tiny then (coff coff) but remember my dad asking for a swap to another airline at the airport for whatever reason... and we got it with no fuss at all.

The other thing I remember was that the price marked on the ticket was higher than what we actually paid...so part of it may have come out of the agent's commission. This was especially so for economy tickets. There was no business class then.

You should frame it up. It could be worth something in the future.

Lemme upload mine by the end of this week. 1987. My first flight and it was on SQ. I must have been real lucky.

Although the sad thing is that the ink is fading.
