Longhaul Y : TG vs OS?
    « Thread Started on: Aug 29th, 2006, 3:19pm »
Will be flying KUL-LHR this September. My travel agent is selling TG and OS at about the same price. I have no *A status but am accumulating miles with KF.

TG has no PTVs in Y but I've heard the food and service is quite good.

Which would you go for and any experience with either?

    Thanks!

OS Y is going to be a lesson in torture.

Their 777's are configured 3-4-3 in the rear part of the plane, and pitch, from what i've heard is horrendous. Don't know if they have PTV's or not, but regardless of TG's lack of PTV's. , their 34 inch pitch can't be beat at that price

Be careful about the fare basis of the tickets you're buying. There have been reports that W on TG do not earn KF miles; W on Miles & More airlines will only get 50%.

Do the new TG cabins have PTVs in Y?
LHR should get the brand new TG config (it should show up as 744 on the schedule). If my rather limited experience on TG is of any help, food and service were very good. I was stuck on an AB6 for much of the time but fear not, they operate better planes to KUL.

OS has decent service if you get the old Lauda air crew from what I hear. Food is reputed to be good. OS's new 777s to KUL have PTVs, but as pointed out above, I don't think you want to be stuck in their cramped seats for 14 hours. I've experienced a similar 3-4-3 style config on EK's 773 and it was very uncomfortable even though I'm small and it's merely a transtasman. On long hauls, sleep is important too.

    Thanks for the replies!
The TG fare basis is B and that gets 100% with ROP so I should get 100% with KF too?
As far as I know, TG 744s have no PTVs in Y and are not part of their refurbishment program.
Sounds like TG is a safer bet.

Another vote for TG's 34" pitch. For some reason I don't think they have installed PTV's in Y on the aircraft that have got the new J & F.

Agree with the above posters ... I think TG Y is the way to go in your case.

That's correct. Y didn't receive any attention in the refurb.

If you go TG, you'll have to stop in BKK. Since you have to stop, why not SQ? KUL-SIN-LHR? PTV is guaranteed Food and service....... Also, slightly longer route = more miles

Ooh...I wish I could go SQ but I need a 1 year return ticket and its quite a bit more than my student budget will allow.

SQ has cheap one year student fares from Asia which come with 30kg baggage allowance. Ask your TA for more details. You'll usually need to provide evidence of ** status as an enrolled student by furnishing the airline with a copy of ** student visa or uni enrolment record.

E-mailed the SQ office in KUL and they sent me a list of travel agents, none of which had student fares. Also tried the usual suspects (STA, MSL) to no avail.

I used to get student fares from mum's TA in JHB for SIN departures to Australia. My little cousin got one of those yesterday. Maybe they don't offer it for students in the UK. In that case, my bad, sorry!
