  • Traveling with Infant

Planning a trip to Europe to catch up with family and old friends during the summer season and will have the wife and little one with me (she'll be around 7 months old then). Any thoughts on which are the best airlines when traveling with infants?

She has only ever been on SQ about a week ago (she's 6 weeks old now) when we left SIN for PVG. Great crew and she slept most of the way but then again it was a fairly short 5-hour flight. Mrs Pinkfloyd seems to think it's better with a break in between while I think it's best to get a straight flight to avoid too many take-off's and landings.

    Any thoughts?

Hi Pinkfloyd! I've always thought SQ handled babies/infants exceptionally well.

SQ cabin crew always seem to take extra time to ensure parents and infants are well settled into their seats on boarding, and in my experience have been very warm and accommodating with any reasonable requests that parents have, such as filling milk bottles with hot water etc.

They are also quite flexible around serving meals to parents and infants...it's little things like saving a parent's preferred meal for later while the baby is fed, or clearing trays first, so that parents with babies have more space.

I'm talking about the Y cabin here, but I am quite sure that babies and parents in F/J would be treated very well too...

On the question of one long flight or two, I am with you on this, and would prefer a single long flight rather than multiple stops.

I'm in agreement with yflyer on SQ/MI.

On SYD-SIN in C on a 2-class bird, IFS had a FSS to look after our 1 year old while my wife and I had our meals.

Likewise, I think a nonstop to Europe is better. Your little one would be able to have a good long sleep and so would you.

I guess it depends on the adults too. Does Mrs Pinkfloyd prefer a non-stop flight herself.

I would think cabin area matters too. If your little one responds positively to being carried for a walk, then J matters more than if the flight is non-stop.

There is more space to handle a baby too in J.

yflyer, We were quite impressed on our PVG flight as we had a CSS and LSS fussing over our little girl (we were in Y). Good thing is that she slept soundly throughout and only had to do a diaper change once.

9V-JKL, the missus does not mind if the flight has a few stops or if it is non-stop. She actually quite likes EY and was toying with the idea of taking them to FRA.

sabian, the missus has a habit of sleeping throughout flights but as for me I find it difficult to get more than 30mins of rest. So I guess the non-stop will suit her better.

Cheers all for your thoughts. Wil be looking at SQ and LH as our first stop will be a town outside of FRA.

SQ C in longhaul seats is fantastic with an infant. It is so wide you have enough room to sleep with the infant next to you, which is what I did with my son at the time. Bassinet on SQ can be a bit of a hassle, because if you experience any kind of turbulence they ask you to take the baby out of the bassinet and into your lap. This is not a good thing with a sleeping baby and this is also how I cam to discover that the baby sleeping next to you in the C seat is doable.
