    Background

“Would you like a buggy back to your villa? Here is a hot water bottle to keep you warm.”

Recently returned from our wonderful 4 night stay at the Emirates One & Only Wolgan Valley Resort. Try saying that 10 times! Located in the greater Blue Mountains 3 hours west of Sydney, it consistently ranks among the top luxury resorts in Australia. This would be our last trip before the wife gives birth to our first little one, so I figured we might as well go all out on this one!

The trip actually all started after seeing a post on Point Hacks regarding the redemption of 60,000 Emirates Skyward reward points per night at the Wolgan Valley resort. For a long time I’ve been accruing Amex Membership Reward points but never had the time off work to redeem them for first class tickets on various redemption partners such as Singapore Airlines. So when this post came up, I was instantly intrigued. The redemption value was great considering one night here can range from $1400 to $2000. Beats redeeming a toaster! Conversion from Amex Reward points to Emirates Skyward was simple enough at 3:2 conversion. I then confirmed with Wolgan Valley Resort directly in regards to availability of the dates I wanted and then submitted my redemption request via the Emirates Skyward membership portal. A few days later I received my confirmation from Emirates for my stay.

Being from out of town, getting to the resort would require choosing one of several options. 1. Hire a car for a week then drive out there. 2. Use a private transfer service which was around $650 AUD. 3. Take the 3 hour train ride from Sydney Central to Lithgow then take a 40 minute taxi ride to the resort costing around $150 all up. 4. Take a helicopter from Sydney Airport direct to the Resort in 45 minutes. Arriving on the red eye into Sydney and with a pregnant wife in tow, we have a winner in option 4!

We were met at domestic arrivals by the driver from Sydney Helitours and were driven 5 minutes to the heliport where our lift to Wolgan Valley was waiting.

Our flight path would take us through Sydney Harbour, over the Harbour Bridge and up the Paramatta River towards the blue mountains. Flying over the bridge and Sydney Opera House was undoubtedly the highlight of the flight.

Cleared for takeoff, we had a nice view of Sydney Airport’s runways

Here we have the Sydney Cricket Ground

Coming up to the iconic Sydney Opera House

    No bridge climbers just yet

After 45 minutes, the pilot began his decent into the valley with cliff faces on either side of us. In the distance you could see the cleared grazing land and the resort in the distance. The landing was great and very smooth as we touched down near the old homestead and our 4WD waiting to transport us to the main homestead.

We would be staying in a Heritage Suite which is a luxuriously appointed one bedroom villa. Each villa has its own heated indoor lap pool. A beautiful gas fire place at the centre is viewed both in the living room and on the other side in the bedroom. The walk in robe is spacious and wife particularly loved the dressing table. The bathroom is spectacular with the highlight being the rain shower with clear glass sky light. The bath is huge and absolutely fantastic when you open up the the fold out windows and hear the wildlife outside while you soak the warm water.

TVs are the usual fare, however an added bonus is there are 40 new release movies to watch free of charge which came in handy when just relaxing in the villa. There is also integrated speakers in the ceiling which can be hooked up to phones or music players. Very nice when chilling out in the pool. Each villa comes with 2 mountain bikes for riding amongst the 4000 acres of land on the property. There is a 16km bike loop of the property which is great for viewing the abundant wildlife and spectacular scenary.

Kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and wallaroos are used to having people around and just hang around near the villas.

There are several guided daily activities included in the stay as well as private tours and activities which can be organised at a reasonable price. Activities included guided wildlife tour, nocturnal wildlife tour and star gazing, old homestead tour, aboriginal culture tour, non-guided hike to the glow worm tunnel, archery, and horse arena experience. So much to do, so little time!

As we were keen hikers, the glow worm tunnel hike was fantastic and highly recommended. The resort drove us 15 minutes by 4WD to the start of the 12km loop. We were then given a pack full of snacks, torches, a map, towels for the small river crossing and also a radio walkie talkie in case there was any trouble, but mainly to call them to come get us when we were ready.

The river crossing was rather refreshing this time in the morning

View over looking the valley with the resort below us and Donkey Mountain in the distance.

The track up to the tunnel is an abandoned railway line used to transport shale oil in the early 1900s. Walking along the terrain however, it’s difficult to imagine how they even built the railway line. What makes this hike great is the changing scenery from bushland to a sub-tropical fern forrest in the gully areas.

Thankfully we had the tunnel to ourselves because in order to see the glow worms you had to turn off your torch. The silence and the darkness just added to the theatre of it all. We made our way down the mountain and radioed the resort to come pick us up. With impeccable timing, our 4WD appeared as we were just putting our shoes back on after the river crossing.

One of my favourite experiences would have to be the horse riding. Firstly we had a meet and greet with the lovely trainers and got to meet some of the horses out in the paddock. The horses are beautiful and extremely well looked after. I was surprised to learn that there was a social hierarchy amongst the horses from the pack leader down to the loner.

After being kitted out in my Driza-Bone and helmet, i was shown how to ride with basic commands. With a bit more practice, we were ready to hit the trail. Due to the poor weather, I was the only one who booked into the group trail ride, so it ended up just being myself and the trainer in the drizzly rain.

It was a brilliant experience as we crossed a couple of rivers and feeling the horse power up the hill effortlessly was amazing.

        Dining

All meals are included in the stay with Breakfast and Dinner served in the main dining area while Lunch is downstairs in the more casual setting.

Breakfast is a combination of cooked to order dishes and also a buffet spread with the usual suspects.

A beautiful mushroom extravaganza with feta and poached eggs on sourdough

A nice australian touch to the coffee which is fantastic!

A cerviche of scallop with avocado

As we are not big drinkers, we found ourselves trying all the different mocktails available. Turns out they're named after the horses such as Marshmallow and Bandit. Some local beers and wines are included in the stay however others can be purchased.

        A trio of chocolate

        Raspberry sorbet

Dinner was a little more formal but the food still spectacular. In the lead up to the trip, I was reading a few reviews heavily criticizing the food and service but after the first dishes came out I was in heaven. The service was brilliant and by the next lunch they knew our preferences for sparkling water and non-alcoholic drinks and also certain ingredients to avoid in pregnancy which I think shows attention to detail.

        Quail breast with liver parfait

Beef tartare with a 63 degree egg yolk

        Barramundi with a corn puree

        Trio of lamb

Our beautiful table setting in front of the fireplace

          Conclusion

If you're looking for a different way to spend your Amex Membership reward or Emirates Skyward points, then Wolgan Valley will fit the bill. It's a great excuse to visit one of Australia's great resort which would normally be out of reach for most financially. With great food, in a beautiful setting with plenty to do and see, you'll never want to leave just like me!

Very nice pics, TofuChicken! Presume this trip was sometime ago? My wife and I was up at Leura and Katoomba 3 weeks ago, and it was FREEEZZZZING! Wanted to do some pre-dawn photography, but just couldn't get myself out the warmth of bedroom.

Thanks CarbonMan! This was only last week but I know what you mean about the freezing mornings. We had a few cloudy days so it wasn't as cold as the clear nights. Did you get some good shots of the Three Sisters?

Thank you - I had no idea I could use my Skyrewards for this. And it's not bad value too.

I had previously considered Wolgan Valley but discounted it as Southern Ocean Lodge and Saffire had better locations. Having done those, Wogan has now gone way up my toDo list. It really looks like you had a great time.

Very nice trip report, tofuchicken! The helicopter ride from Sydney looks to be one of the highlights of the trip. The resort itself looks really good too!

As of earlier this year you can't redeem skywards miles to stay at this property anymore.
I had 60k ready to go but was waiting for more points to be credited so I could have a longer stay - only to find out that I missed the cut off by 3 days !!

That's such bad luck timandthecity! I only realised you weren't able to redeem after I posted the trip report. Such a shame as I was looking forward to coming back.
