  • Driving In Western Australia

    HI peeps,

I will be in Perth and Margaret River next week. Still weighing my land tour options: Self-drive vs engaging a tour company.

Obviously cost is a major factor. Renting a car for a week will cost a maximum of AUD1,000, inclusive of petrol. From the quotes I have received, using a tour company is going to cost AUD3,500.

Can someone help me understand how easy or difficult it is to drive in the Margaret River region, given that we will be visiting during early winter? I have driven in New Zealand's South Island in spring (including making my way in heavy rain towards Milford Sound), but winter driving is a totally different story. In addition, what classes of vehicles can a Singaporean with Class 3 licence drive? I am looking at getting an eight-seater like Toyota Hiace.

Any help rendered will be appreciated.

Hi SQ22! Self drive is no problem around Perth / Margaret River. Very good paved roads, not too many cars, and most drivers are extremely courteous. As long as you don't speed, and have a GPS, you will be fine.

I would recommend an MPV like a Toyota Tarago (Like an Estima), which seats 7.

You want have any issues driving there, make sure you have a GPS (don't rely on your phone as there are reception black spots on the way). Bayswater Car Rental should be cheapest for a Toyota Tarago at AUD$602/Week, don't be put off as the have no airport pick up location it's a AUD$15 taxi ride away. Also not 100% sure if required but a International Driving Permit would be a good idea (especially for insurance purposes).

Also note BAC limit in WA is 0.05% if the driver plans to drink.

And local police do test it, at 9pm last Sunday not far from Margaret River main street, we were stopped at a road block. I came clean but I think that was close (we shared a bottle of local red wine over dinner). Not even checking driving license, just a quick breath analyzer.

That's a beautiful and quiet drive indeed. Presume it included Cradle Mountain?
