  • HKG - New QF Lounge

Well it's a while since I have been as impressed as this when seeing a lounge for the first time, but it really is fantastic.

It's huge for a start and as it runs along most of the upper balcony area it enjoys superb panoramic views out over the airfield on that side as it is able to take advantage of HKG's fabulous light and airy feel due to the huge windows. When I was in there the first time it was mid afternoon and there was only about half a dozen people in there, which made it even better.

I would rate this as the best lounge in HKG now for actual look and feel of the place, better than The Wing, The Cabin, The Pier and The Bridge especially at that time of the day when The Wing I had just left was packed, as it always seems to be these days. Although I do like The Wings Noodle Bar.

It has to be said when you consider the perennially grim windowless box that is the SKL sits underneath this place it really does bring home who makes the effort with the lounges. I know the SKL is having a refurb but it's still going to be dark and windowless, especially compared to this place.

I just visited the new QF lounge in HKG last week.

I agree with MAN Flyer that it is fantastic. It compares very favourably with, and is in several ways better, than the CX Lounges such as The Wing (Which is an amazing achievement , since the CX Lounges in HK are among the best I have visited anywhere, and far better than the other airline lounges in HKG).

It is tucked away in a less accessible location (turn right immediately after immigration), and is not one of those lounges you will stumble upon by chance, but it is worth seeking out if you are on a Oneworld carrier.

Full set of pictures coming up, as soon as I have the opportunity...

Will have a chance to drop by a CX lounge during transit for one of my flights next year, maybe I should take a look at this QF one instead.

Sorry folks. As nice as that QF lounge is... it's always like the republic of boganland inside. NO likey!

Last week, I spent a couple of hours in transit in HKG, enroute to Shanghai/Suzhou on CX and KA.

I deplaned from my SIN-HKG flight, CX650 (Coincidentally a 6.50am departure) at 10.20am and after clearing transit security, I was in the airside area soon after.

While I was at a different section of the airport, quite close to some of the other excellent CX Lounges in HKG, I opted to trek from my gate over to the Gate 15 area to check out the new QF Lounge.

Just a few X'mas decorations up at HKG, but that should be enough, I think. You don't have to go over-the-top and turn the whole airport into Santa's North Pole / Disney Paradise the way they have done it at Changi this year...

On the way to the new QF Lounge, I passed the SQ Lounge. This is the newly remodelled entrance to The Cave...

The new QF Lounge is actually on the same level as the check-in / security / immigration area.

You make a sharp right turn immediately after clearing security/immigration, and the lounge entrance is at the far end of the corridor.

A quick scan of my boarding pass, and I was shown in...

As MAN Flyer has said, this is a stunning lounge.

It is large and spacious, with beautiful styling and superb tarmac views.

There is a well stocked bar...

And ample seating and dining space...

These pictures of the lounge were taken between 11am and 12.30pm. There must have been fewer than 20 people in there while I was there, unlike SQflyergirl's experience.

It might well be that the best time to visit this lounge is when you are NOT flying QF. At peak QF hours, it is probably packed. But when QF flights are not operating, this place is paradise!

More pictures of the seating and dining areas. I found the interior design of the lounge outstanding: distinctive and very stylish yet subtle (to my untrained eye...).

The overall impression was one of calm and spaciousness.

Moving on to the dining area...

I headed back to the bar to get a drink...

The bar doesn't serve champagne (They have sparking wine) and they do not have a long menu of cocktails like the CX Wing, but the bartender did suggest one of their signature cocktails, called the Chi Chi, made with dark rum, kafir lime and vanilla as well as fruit juice, which he made for me from scratch.

This was fruity and very refreshing...

I brought it over to one of the tables overlooking the tarmac...

I went over to the buffet to have lunch before my flight...

They were just changing over from the breakfast menu to lunch...

This was an all-buffet affair, with no cook-to-order dishes available, however the selection was very impressive.

[UPDATE: I did not see the cook-to-order menu, perhaps I may have missed it because I arrived in-between breakfast and lunch hours, but MAN Flyer and jbflyer did confirm that they do have several cook-to-order selections available at the bar counter.]

A very lovingly prepared array of salads and starters...

                  Cream of Roasted Pumpkin Soup...

Several main courses, both Western and Asian, including Penne Pasta, and a wonderful, standout, dish of belly pork in dark sauce (Very similar to Chinese Dao Yew Bak)...

                    ...accompanied by steamed coconut rice...

There was also a small dessert selection.

The food was superb, better in taste and quality than many airport restaurants, and a cut above regular airport lounge fare.

HKG is one of those airports where I try to plan extra long transit stops when I connect through there. On the rare occasion there is a delay (my connecting KA flight from HKG to PVG was delayed 30 min), my reaction is usually "Great! More time to enjoy the lounge!".

Overall, this is a superb lounge, very much the equal to the J class lounge sections of the CX Lounges in HKG, which are already some of the best airport lounges in the world.

                        Thumbs up, Qantas!

I suspect that lounge is more full when there is a Qantas flight operating...when I was there at around 11.30am-12.30pm, it was fairly quiet. By contrast when I visited the CX Wing a few days later at around the same time of day, it was packed!

Maybe a good strategy at HKG would be lounge-hopping...peek into each lounge to check out the crowd before heading in!

Thanks for the fabulous pictures, yflyer. It looks like a great lounge indeed.

No cooked to order food unlike SIN? Well, at least the selection is fairly decent.
