  • KNO - The new Medan's KUALANAMU International Airport

Opening 25th of July 2013 to replace the old 85 years old Polonia International Airport (MES). The new airport will carry a new IATA code of KNO and is located in the town of Kuala Namu 42 km east from downtown Medan.

The new Kualanamu airport occupies the land area at least 10 times the size of the old Polonia airport and is designed to handle 8 - 10 million passengers per year in its 1st phase. Upon the completion of all 3 phases, the airport will be able to handle at least 25 million passengers per year.

Polonia will cease operation past midnight on July 24th (early morning of July 25th). All flight services to and from Medan will commence from Kualanamu on July 25th.

While the new airport is reportedly completed and ready to operate, the non toll road access to the new airport is still having issues due to land clearing and resistance from the local community to move away. The construction of a toll road to this new airport from Medan has just begun and is not expected to complete before the end of 2015 or early 2016.

This new airport, however, will be the 1st airport in Indonesia that has direct train service with a train station connected to the airport.

Photos will be posted soon. All photos are credited to respective contributors and owners at skyscrapercity.com

    How exciting!

I remember the morning flights to MES from JKT (yes, the actual airport that bore that designation ) in the early 80s. A GA AB4 and an MZ VGP (the latter which took twice as long, but I really wanted to be on that one!!)

Oh well, KNO airport it will be from now then

I did those flights before too quite a number of times before the move to CGK. The old JKT was indeed quite unique. Now, it is time for us to say goodbye to MES and to welcome KNO.

The pics look great! Kinda reminds me of KUL

It says on Wikipedia that the airport will be connected by train to a city air terminal next month? Impressive

I foresee a trip to KNO this autumn

Wow, I suitably impressed that a city of that size can come up with such a facility.

wow, even better than CGK. This is kind of embarrasing, but I never actually set foot outside Java and Bali - and even that, I've been to Bandung only once. Medan is on my wishlist, but somewhat always superseded by the likes of SIN, LHR (where I spend half of my life so far), NRT/HND/ICN (practically live in there - though still in hotels. A visit can last more than 1 month - that includes going back to CGK for several days)

IMO, Jakarta needs a new airport, and close CGK and Halim. I love the idea of Boris (Johnson)'s Island. Why not use one of the thousand islands for the airport?
