  • Thai authorities threaten to do somethining about immigration queues at BKK

As anyone who is a regular through Suvarnabhumi will know, these queue's have been getting worse for the last 6 months or so and for a country that relies so much on tourism they really are an embarassment.

Interesting to see the picture in the article linked below, it shows a picture of a guy with an automated machine that was tested in 2005 !!!. It's now 2011, and they are still thinking about it. Methinks somebody is still waiting for their 'cut'.

I'm sure they wil get it ready soon, and then wait another 6-9 months until the next Royal birthday to open it...

Complaints of long queues from passengers transitting Suvarnabhumi Airport have prompted the Immigration Bureau to increase staff and install automatic machines to help speed up immigration formalities.

The long queues of passengers at the airport was revealed by the Bangkok Post on Feb 14, the same date the Prime Minister was made aware of the problem at a meeting of the Joint Public and Private Sector Consultative Committee.

According to Pol Lt Gen Wiboon Bangthamai, the immigration commissioner, the solutions, tabled Feb 21 to the cabinet, include not just improvement in the quality of service but also boosting airport security since the number of passengers passing through Suvarnabhumi has doubled from 50,000 to 100,000 daily recently. As such, more staff will be recruited to man immigration checkpoints.

"At present we have staff enough to man only 75% of the checkpoints. We are working with the Royal Thai Police to add more officers and asking our staff not to go on leave but work extra time during peak passenger traffic and long holidays," said Pol Maj Gen Preecha Thimanontri, Commander of Immigration Division 2, which is in charge of the immigration department at Suvarnabhumi.

"We will try to fill up all the counters," he said, adding that payment for overtime work will come from Airports of Thailand.

Traffic through the airport is at its peak between 4-5am, in the afternoon and after 10pm, at least that's been the case the last couple of months, when passengers have been kept waiting 1-2 hours standing in long queues to complete immigration formalities.

"The number of passengers has increased this year and we do realise the need to fix the problem as quickly as possible," said Pol Maj Gen Preecha.

And there are plans to reduce check-up time at the departure gate from 45 to 15-20 seconds per passenger.

"Since Feb 3 we have deployed an additional 70 officers to help deal with the problem of long queues, that also is a result of visitors overstaying or standing in wrong lines, by redirecting them to proper queues," he explained.

In addition, the bureau plans to install machines capable of performing immigration formalities for passengers. This will eliminate the need to recruit more personnel. But initially, their use will be confined to Thais holding e-passports.

The Finance Ministry has set aside 76 million baht for the purpose and now it is in the process of holding an auction to select a vendor to install the system that should, hopefully, be in place by October.

The law has been revised to make room for e-passport which enables holders to go through immigration formalities _ automatically _ bypassing the need to obtain a stamp or signature of an immigration officer. "The processing time will be just 20 seconds for each holder of an e-passport," he added.

The Immigration Bureau, meanwhile, is working with the Interior Ministry towards a provision that would no longer require Thais exiting or entering the country to fill out the Tor Mor 6 departure/arrival form.

"The Tor Mor 6 will not be needed once e-passports become the norm for Thai travellers," he said.

Additionally, there are certain tools the Immigration Bureau is planning to apply, such as departure pre-check mobile system, Personal Identification Security Comparison Evaluation (PISCE) system, and Advance Passenger Processing and Advance Processing Information system to improve security at the airport.

To that end it is offering officers manning arrivals counters a 3,000-baht reward for every fake passport spot. Introduced last October, they have already identified 200 in which cases have been filed.

"As we are the first port of entry for those visiting our country, we need to focus not only on improving our service, but also strengthening our security," he said.

The bureau's ultimate goal, announced last year, is to make sure immigration formalities for passengers are completed inside 24 minutes. That used to be the norm once, and it is determined to bring it back.

I personally won't be holding my breath for this. We may only see some improvement in 2020 at the rate they're going.

This is a really compelling reason to fly TG J. Even the regular Fasttrack is slow in the mornings...

While I am fortunate enough to have Fast Track access in and out of BKK, the queue's at immigration in the last few weeks, both inbound and outbound, have been as bad as I have ever seen them at Suvarnabhumi. Right down the ramps at inbound and the outbound last Saturday were half way down the terminal. I know they have some work going on at the moment, but still...

They are in the midst of a token gesture clamp down after the Iranians rubber grenade chuckers, but this was going on before that incident and is a disgrace for a country that relies so heavily on tourism.

Had to fly through BKK twice this last couple of days and lines were long. Took about 20-30 mins to clear immigration going in and out. Wish I had fast track...

This was - and it seems from the above will continue to be - one of the reasons why I try to avoid BKK altogether.

Normally when flying in on SQ, it parks right along the main building at the D 2-6 gates. But no, yesterday's arriving flight SQ 974 was parked waaaay over at the C gates where the TG flights normally park. Boy, was it a trek to the immigration hall. And then when I got there, I heard it took an average of 2 hours to clear. I had Fasttrack so just zipped through.

                Today's departure however, was ridiculous.

Fast track had a queue which filled the small hallway right into the security area. This was the Premium Lane for all airlines except TG.

I thought it was a computer break down ! It wasn't even 'extra' security checks.. it was just S-L-O-W everywhere!

I see BKK airport didn't get past the top 20 best airports in cnn's latest poll ! I can see why !

Anyone knows what the eligibility criteria for the Fast Track service is?

We are travelling on MH in Business. Does premium cabin travel on any airline automatically entitles us access to Fast Track? Or is there some sort of booking/fee/(whatever it is we have to do) that needs to be organised in advance?
All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

I think it depends on the airline actually. Haven't flown MH business class into BKK, so can't comment about MH.

But SQ and EK will actually hand you a fast/priority track card which gives you access to the fast track lane and you actually hand the card in to the immigration officer along with your passport (CI only started this practice less than a year ago in/out of BKK for their business class passengers)

No, it depends whether the airlines has an agreement (ie paid) for their premium pax to use Fast Track. If they have then you should be given a Fast Track card before arrival. TG used to do this but have now stopped and tell you to just go to Fast Track and show your BP. I haven't flown in on MH since Don Muang so no idea if they have it.

As someone who likes to hoard Fast Track cards for future rainy days I never willingly hand over the cards and only do so if asked, which I would estimate happens around half of the time. Same for outbound immigration. The problem is even the Fast Track lines are bad at the moment (someone was telling me at the weekend they were in a queue of 40 last week with just one guy processing Fast Track) and I have previously gone through the central immigration area that crew use, played dumb and handed over a Fast Track card.

For BKK always take the opportunity to get as many Fast Track passes as you can when the opportunity arises. Flying up with an LSS you know is usually handy for this.

Don't they stamp the date on those things? I've never needed to use the fast track line as I need a visa on arrival. I usually use "special" line (god knows who it's actually for) which incurs a 500 baht "administration fee" that doesn't end up on the receipt. The standard line for VoA is pretty busy but no way near as crowded as the Fast Track lines. I happened to beat my partner (used the Fast Track line), sometimes needing a visa on arrival is a blessing in disguise. *

It's even better at CGK with 3/4 counters for a handful of passengers.

Love it! I must try doing that for LHR, I could make some beer money for sure selling it to Y.

MH J will get you a fast track card, both inbound and outbound.
