Just got this from Air France/KLM newsletter

New Flying Blue Rules
From 1 April 2009, there are some changes to the Flying Blue Programme rules. Flying Blue is committed to rewarding its active members. Hence with regards to Flying Blue Ivory Members who fly at least once within 20 months on AIR FRANCE or KLM, Air Europa, Kenya Airways, Air Calin, or one of the SkyTeam Member Airlines, Award Miles are valid for life. This is a change from the previous Award Miles validity period of 36 months.

With regards to Flying Blue Elite Members (Silver, Gold, Platinum),
Award Miles will be protected as long as Elite Status is maintained by the members.

So... Flying Blue is giving frequent flyers more during these uncertain times... whereas Krisflyer is taking the opposite direction & watering down their benefits as much as they can!

Citibank cards & NW's Worldperks

Most US airlines' FFP have this rule now. Northwest airlines' worldperks' miles do not expire if you have a transaction every 3 years..AAdvantage, United Mileage Plus, US Airways Dividend Miles every 18 months. There is good and bad. For frequent flyers who fly regularly benefit most, those who clock miles mostly from credit card point don't.

Krisflyer and Asia miles need a lot of miles to redeem tickets. Asia Miles have more variety like hotel stays, vouchers, gifts etc.
Northwest airlines' worldperks is the best. For any destination in North and southeast asia, you need 20k in economy class and 30k in business class, and can redeem on Northwest, malaysia airlines, china airlines, china eastern/southern and can mix the airlines on your redemption itinerary. Compare to Krisflyer or Asia Miles, say if you want to redeem a ticket on business class from singapore to tokyo, you need 70k miles, on NW's worldperks, you need 30k miles only!
United's mileage plus also need 20k miles for Y class and 30k for J class for redemption for any destination in N n S east asia..BUT all sectors must be on united airlines. for eg: to fly from SIN to HKG or NRT on UA, you need 20k in Y and 30k in J! on the SIN-HKG route, you can enjoy the new business class seats for only 30k miles compared to Krisflyer/asia miles where you need 50k!! http://www.suitedreams.united.com/
However if you are based in Singapore, there is no credit cards' points that you can transfer to United's mileage plus. For NW's worldperks, you can transfer from Citibank credit cards such as CitiPremiermiles ($1 = 1.2miles), clear platinium & Visa platinum, which offers 5x rewards ($1 = 2 miles) at certain places like Cafes, Cinemas, Nightspots,
Books/Music Stores, supermarkets, dept stores like Tangs . Isetan . John Little . Marks & Spencer . Metro . OG . Robinsons . BHG . Takashimaya Department Store, Carrefour . Cold Storage . Giant . Market Place . NTUC Fair Price . Shop N Save . Singapore Meidi-Ya (Applicable only at outlets accepting credit card payment)

In a nutshell, support Citibank cards & NW's Worldperks!!

I don't understand how it would benefit frequent flyers more than the ones get their miles using credit cards. Any type of transaction will extend the expiration.

Ans: For AAdvantage, United Mileage Plus, US Airways Dividend Miles, for someone who is based in Singapore, there are no credit card points that can be transferred to these FFPs and the only way to earn miles is to fly or stay hotel. Say you have 18k miles and short of 2k miles, if there are no credit card whose points that can be transferred if you are in Singapore, the only way is to fly or stay in hotels.

Ans: Yup, I agree, and its more convenient to redeem online too and they can show you the flights on different airlines. But if you have a problem and if based in Singapore, you have to call up their Hong Kong office. Also, if you are based in Singapore, there are no credit card points that can be transferred too.

Combining miles with other members n using family member's mileage

I am aware that some FFPs like United's Mileage Plus, Northwest's Worldperks and Air Canada's Aeroplan, they allow you to transfer your mileage from 1 member to another member for a fee.

In addition, for the 2 Korean airlines, Korean Air's Skypass and Asiana Airlines' Asiana Club, they allow your family members who stay in the same household as you to combine the miles together to redeem for an award, FREE of charge!
On top of that, Skypass, Asiana Club and UA's Mileage Plus have this policy: when you accumulate 1 million miles, no time limit, you get LIFETIME top-tier membership, regardless of class flown.

Why can't Krisflyer be like this?

Yeap, Northwest Worldperks is definitely the best FFP I've seen in terms of value

Now they're merging with Delta but the good news is we still get to keep our Worldperks miles and they still wont expire over a certain period of time!

KF is not the greatest program. I think we all agree with that. However, given some of the comments here regarding NW, I'm gonna have to chime in as I flew them for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time and will kick the whole thing off by saying I STILL have tons of worthless miles to prove it as their award availability is TERRIBLE. Heck the last time I used my miles was via paying $450 to use 30k miles for a domestic upgrade (full redemption ticket was not available as usual)!

Really? My sister just claimed her Worldperks for an award Malaysian Airlines flight a few months ago from Singapore to Tokyo with no problem.

WP Award availability is so much better when you're PE or GE. In the last one year, I've booked all the following awards on preferred dates:

DTW-NRT-SIN RT in NW C
DTW-JFK-BOM RT in NW domestic F/DL C
LHR-BOM-GOI RT in IT C
LHR-BLR-DEL in IT C
MEX-CUN RT in AM C
DTW-SFO in NW Y (elite upgraded to domestic F both ways) using the 6K credit card discount

I do think that the party is ending with DL taking over, though. I'm looking for a way to rationalize my NW and DL balances (both over 300K each).
