    Good questions.

For people to give you a proper answer, could you please advise:

    (i) have you opened a KrisFlyer account ?

(ii) if yes, when you login to your KF account, what does it show under "Qualification Miles", i.e. Elite Miles and PPS Value ?

(iii) do you have a mileage account with another Star Alliance airline and if so, what is your status in that other account ?

OK - there are two separate systems. PPS is the true elite frequent flyer programme for those who fly on SQ in business or first; and KrisFlyer is the mass market version (with less beneits).

Firstly, PPS - to qualify, you need to fly on business or first class tickets on actual SQ planes (no codeshares on other airlines) which have a total ticket value (excluding taxes and surcharges - called PPS Value) of S$25,000 within a period of 12 months. As a PPS, you automatically get Star Alliance gold status (see below). The next (and top) level, Solitaire PPS requires S$250,000 over a period of 5 years.

Secondly, KrisFlyer Elite Silver (Star Alliance silver status) or KrisFlyer Elite Gold (Star Alliance gold status) - to qualify for silver, you need to earn 25,000 Elite Miles within your membership year; and to qualify for gold, you need to earn 50,000 Elite Miles within your membership year. You can see what your membership year is by looking in your KF account. Unlike PPS, Elite Miles can be earned on any Star Alliance airline in any class.

Your round trip from London to Sydney - LHR-SIN-SYD-SIN-LHR - is about 21,345 miles (what we call "bum in seat" miles). However, as you're flying in business class, this is increased by 0.25 to give you 21,345 x 1.25 = 26,681 Elite Miles. In other words, one trip will qualify you for Elite Silver and assuming the next trip is within the same 12 month period, the next trip will qualify you for Elite Gold. If it's not within the same 12 month period, then you'd have to make two such trips to qualify to Elite Gold from Elite Silver.

So long as you setup your KrisFlyer account properly (i.e. put the number of the relevant Star Alliance programme in your profile), you'll always get PPS Value regardless of whether you choose to credit your miles (Elite Miles) to KrisFlyer or another programme. You should therefore look to see whether it'll be more worthwhile for you to credit your miles to KrisFlyer or to another Star Alliance programme (all of which have different qualification criteria and benefits).

Finally, just to note that Elite Miles are used for (re)qualification purposes only. If you credit your flights to KrisFlyer, you also get KrisFlyer Redeemable Miles which are the miles you can use for upgrades or award flights.

I hope the above gives you some background to go on but please ask if you have any questions.

Thanks very much for your help.

The trip LHR-SIN-SYD-SIN-LHR will be for my wife and I on the same day I book and paid for both so should be on my account and would therefore I think then add up to 26,681*2 =53362 so should then be a gold member.

As these are booked and paid for when would this status be available to me.

I think as regard PPS miles ect as i paid in UK pounds i would have at current exchange rate S$20000 so short on becomming aPPS member again when would the be avialable to me

A we are travelling from LHR i would like to get access to VS Clubhouse is this possable

Again thanks very much for your help and info

Unfortunately not. The Elite Miles (for KrisFlyer Elite Silver/Gold status) and the PPS Value go to the person actually sitting in the seat, i.e. not the person (or company) paying for the ticket. For the same reason, you can't on any frequent flyer programme book and pay for two seats in your name on the same flight and get double the miles.

As it turns out therefore, both you and your wife would qualify for KrisFlyer Elite Silver after you've each flown the return flight. After the flights, the PPS Value would appear in both your and your wife's account.

The situation seems unclear as mentioned in this thread (which I see you've already posted to):

It might be better for the OP to try for another FFP that would earn him and her *G status after those flights...

                BMI?

BD would only earn him 32,000+ miles, not enough for *G. He'll need 57,000 to make BD *G for the 1st time

                    skooby,

I think *G status would be most achievable on Thai, Turkish and Asiana for a newcomer, in that order.

However this trip alone will not get you *G on any FFP. At best, *S on a few of the carriers, and because of the 1.25% multiplier on SQ metal, Krisflyer Elite Silver also.

The 125% multiplier I mentioned above isn't because the flight is on SQ metal but rather because it's in business class.

You may be getting this mixed up with the 125% multiplier which applies for redeemable miles (but not elite miles) when someone with KrisFlyer Elite Silver status credits to KrisFlyer.

The best star alliance mileage program : UA mileage plus.

Accumulate yr miles in UA and claim yr miles on SQ flight!

i don't agree with this. UA sure has benefits but there is no actual 'best' ffp around, otherwise people would all be jacking this particular program. probably the best available program for many people is bmi Diamond Club.

                              a) it's undoubtably one of the best, if not the best, program for award flights. the cash and miles option is simply great. and you don't need that many miles for premium class travel.

                              b) bmi dc is also one of the best programs when it comes to re-qualifying for gold status. it only takes you 38k miles you need to get within a year to do so and that's even manageable by a student as myself

on a sidenote: UA miles are quite good value. but you have no lounge access in the US with UA *A Gold Status while bmi Gold gives you access when traveling in Economy Class.

One has to balance the benefits of a program to one's own travel behavior to maximize the value of a FFP. So yeah, as already said ... there is no best ONE FFP.
