Given the intense competition with CX, I'm surprised that SQ would put the old seat product back on the HKG route. I expect some of the HKG flights will get the refurbished 777-300s when the Kioto seat problem gets sorted.
HKG-SIN route, for people in Y class, especially Hong Kong people, they just need a seat with lowest fare.
For C class passengers, some just stick to their mileage program, and the others who prefer quality, must use SQ since they can predict what they get during booking. If they want the wide, new seat, just book the A380, 77W flights.
For First passengers, the only choice for them is SQ as CX do not put the aircrafts with F regularly in this route.
So I do not think SQ need to put CX in their eyes for putting which aircraft to HKG-SIN route. Even SQ's old 772 is still on par with most frequencies of CX for this route as CX normally use their crappy old A330, 772 and 773 (All without AVOD)for this route
The advantages for CX would be those prefer One World Alliance and those who speak Cantonese only

SQ 870 and SQ 859 will be using back the old regional 772 aircrafts from 30th Sep and 1st Oct onwards respectively.

Does anyone know why SQ 859 will be changed back to the old planes ? I flew on SQ 859 this week with the new seats, and I am not looking forward to going back to the old seats when this happens.

I doubt that's the reason. HK is pretty safe (even though it is stricly in China), and I've never heard of any theft or anything like that from planes left overnight there.
It may be due to utilisation reasons that they don't want the refurbed 772 to stay overnight there.
I think so since the SQ870/859 rotation, the aircraft stay in HKG for more than 11 hours. It would be better to fly back SIN and do a red-eye flight to somewhere.

Maybe they don't want the refurb 772 to stay overnight at Hong Kong
