Singapore Airlines A380 To Fly To Melbourne

      15 July 2009

Come 29 September 2009, customers travelling between Singapore and Melbourne will get to enjoy an unrivalled inflight experience as Singapore Airlines operates the Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft in the world, to the city.

Melbourne will be the second city in Australia and sixth city in the Airline’s network to receive the A380. Sydney was the first to receive the superjumbo when Singapore Airlines began operating the A380 in October 2007. The Airline subsequently added London, Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong to its list of A380 destinations.

“We are excited to fly the A380 to Melbourne, the second most populous city in Australia and a vibrant centre for commerce, arts, industry, sports and tourism. As the greenest widebody aircraft in the sky, the 471-seat A380 will increase the seat capacity to Melbourne by 10%, without the need for additional frequencies,” said Mr. Huang Cheng Eng, Executive Vice President, Marketing and the Regions.

The daily A380 flights will replace an existing daily Boeing 747-400 service to Melbourne. SQ227 will depart Singapore Changi Airport at 2100hrs and arrive in Melbourne at 0610hrs (0710hrs from 4 October 2009 due to daylight savings) the next day. On the return leg, SQ228 will depart Melbourne at 1550hrs (1650hrs from 4 October 2009) and touch down in Singapore at 2140hrs.

Singapore Airlines currently operates 21 weekly services between Singapore and Melbourne. The Airline also flies to four other Australian cities including Adelaide (7 times weekly), Brisbane (19 times weekly), Perth (19 times weekly) and Sydney (28 times weekly).

Customers travelling on the Singapore Airlines A380 to Melbourne will experience unsurpassed standards of luxury and sophistication in air travel.

A private sanctuary in the sky awaits every Singapore Airlines Suites customer. Exclusive to the A380, each Suite comes with sliding doors and adjustable roller blinds. The Singapore Airline Suites come furnished with a luxurious and fully adjustable leather seat, upholstered by world-renowned Poltrona Frau, and a full-sized bed. For entertainment, customers can enjoy crystal-clear images on a sleek 23-inch high-resolution LCD monitor, mounted on the wall in each Suite.

Measuring 86 centimetres (34 inches) in width, the Singapore Airlines Business Class seat is the widest in its class. Each seat has direct access to the aisle and can be converted into a comfortable wide bed, simply by folding down the seat back.

Singapore Airlines’ new Economy Class seats also offer customers unprecedented comfort and space. The ergonomically designed seat not only maximises knee and legroom, it boasts intelligent features such as a non-intrusive reading light and height-adjustable leather headrests with side panels.

Customers across all three classes can enjoy a wide range of the latest movies, TV programmes and a library of CDs on KrisWorld, Singapore Airlines’ award-winning inflight entertainment system. Delectable meals, designed exclusively by world-class chefs like Matt Moran from Australia and Sam Leong from Singapore, are also served and presented on exclusive Givenchy-designed service ware.

Singapore Airlines currently has nine A380s in service, a further ten on firm order, and options on six more.

          SQ flies A380 to Melbourne
          By Karamjit Kaur, Aviation Correspondent

SINGAPORE Airlines will fly the Airbus 380 to Melbourne from Sept 29.

It will be the second Australian city, after Sydney; and the sixth destination that SIA will serve using the superjumbo jets.

Sydney was the first to receive the aircraft when SIA began operating it in October 2007.

Since then, the airline has added London, Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong to its list of A380 destinations.

The flight to Melbourne will replace an existing daily Boeing 7474-400 service.

SQ 227 will leave Changi Airport at 9pm and arrive in the Australian city at about 6am the next day, SIA said in a statement on Wednesday.

On the return leg, SQ228 will depart Melbourne at about 4pm and touch down in Singapore just before 10pm.

SIA currently operates 21 weekly services between the two cities.

It also operates to four other Australian cities; Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

SIA's executive vice-president for marketing and the regions Huang Cheng Eng said: 'We are excited to fly the A380 to Melbourne, the second most populous city in Australia and a vibrant centre for commerce, arts, industry, sports and tourism... The 471-seat A380 will increase the seat capacity to Melbourne by 10 per cent, without the need for additional frequencies.'

The airline currently has nine A380s in service, and another 10 on firm order.

Well looks like I have missed the A380 by one month as I am on the corresponding flight in late August on the 747-400.

                Oh well...
