  • The Mile Hi! Club: Ex-SQ Girl Publishes Book on Experiences

    Dear Folks,

There is a new book titled "The Mile Hi! Club" written by a former Air Stewardess, Janet Chew. Just saw it in the book shop in Singapore last Saturday.

No mentioned of SQ but seems to have SQ stamps all over the place (at least from my initial browsing). Have not read it yet.

It cost about SGD 22 and you should be able to have a look at the airport book shop.

By the way, I don't know her nor I am her literary agent!

I believe the newspaper has a column about the author (ex-stewardess) last week. Sounds like some juicy stories to read.

Yeah, there was a write-up in the Today newspaper. Of course, nothing beats stories right from the horse's mouth and this may be as close as some people will get to Confessions of an SQ Stewardess.

I read part of the book. More details can be found at www.milehiclub.sg. Quite interesting book but not unexpected in some details to the more experienced traveler. There was apparently a EY pax who flashed his "card" and the thoughts going thru' her head was that 25% of pax already have the card. Another involved her charge sharing the loo with an Australian pax.

Perhaps this dates me but, even better than "R" for the purposes of qualification was what the crews referred to as "SQ1", which was a cabin with a bed and a lockable door just to the left at the top of the spiral staircase to the upper deck on the original 747's. This was ideal on my honeymoon RTW/F.

This is not a confession per se. It is an insightful revelation of the livestyles of the cabin crew, the same ones with whom most of you have had a brief interaction onboard.

Perhaps after the read, some passengers might take offence while others would appreciate us for what we do in-flight. But i personally feel that with a greater understanding of the other party's job scope and contraints, passengers would look at us in a different light. Postive, to be exact.

                  Welcome to SQTalk!

As many others have acknowledged on various parts of this board, including myself, we've got nothing against those flying in the air. A lot of animosity has thus far been directed at those on the ground that we don't 'get'/agree with including the corporation of which this board derives its namesake.

And do know that your 'extra miles' are appreciated. It doesn't have to be specific to the airline industry either - I believe those who work hard deserve to be commended.

Anyway, I'm considering getting this book as I always love hearing stories from some of my friends who were/still are SQ cabin crew. Definitely surprised that no *gag order* or NDA was in order for the author when she resigned. She was probably very careful not to step over any boundaries.

A Warm Welcome xtramile. Thank you for the kind compliments. I have now actually given in and brought the book as a small token of support. The writer was obviously very careful on what she has written. I thought it was good that someone bothered to write on this subject.

I noted one part that some locals are not very responsive to good service or greetings from cabin crew...I do find it happening in day to day life in Singapore. Something we need to work on collectively.

After reading about the challenges in the book, I just wondered how the new generation of Singapore Girls will take to washing toilets particularly when some do not have to lift a finger at home and every thing was done by maids? Are they going to take the attitude "if I don't liked it, I can always move to another job" instead of slogging it out with a more positive attitude.

thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I joined this forum because the culture here is refined, not to mention, very informative as well.

I certainly agree that diligence should never go unnoticed and unappreciated. Sad to say, it takes an appreciative person to even notice and take the trouble to acknowledge what we girls often refer to "extra mile".

But i take heart that even if no one knows, a job well done and effort put in will always remain, and that is what no one can take away from us. If the passengers still complain that our service sucks or the boss screams at the tops of his lungs about the month's quota, so be it. We still trudge on.

Amid stories of scandals, love and job contraints, the contents of The Mile Hi !Club provide a balanced view of the industry as a whole. The general public is taken behind the scenes in the hope that negative perceptions of such service providers can be dispeled.

I popped into the Times Newslink place opposite the escalators to the SKL's in T2 last night to see if they had this. They did indeed and said they had been selling very well. I bought a copy and look forward to getting the chance to read it.
