Well I was considering doing 2-3 SIN-Europe RTs in Y on SQ for work but one trip will only be after Jun 30 if at all and for the other two LH & OS beat the socks of SQ fare wise (flex Y with *A connections in Europe on LH/ OS as SQ doesn't fly to my final destinations). So while I was hoping for a nice upgrade cert it won't happen as my client is not willing to pay 30-40% more for me flying SQ.
(e.g I got SIN-FRA-DUS-LEJ-MUC-MAD-FRA-SIN for 3.2K SGD in a fully flexible LH M fare, SQ & LH booked separately would have cost 5K+) Oh well at least I got instant gratification from LH who op-uped me on FRA-SIN to C - I'm happy
thanks for the input guys. i didnt think there would be a much better alternative.
with regard to the str alliance part, i was hoping there would be a good priced ticket that would encompass the flying within the USA but still fly SQ metal on most legs.
i saw fares on OW like circle pacific or something or other that may cover that but i had not really looked closely at it so am not sure.
Hi All, my dad needs some help he is doing the following route :
MEL-SIN-SFO-LAS-LAX-NRT-SIN-MEL The total SQ mileage for this in Y adds up to 24,713 miles just shy of the 25,000 for the upgrade cert.
Anyone have any ideas how to get that extra 287 miles on this route? Any idea if there are any Star Alliance tickets that can cover this nicely as well?
Worst case he will do a SIN-KUL return.
star alliance flights can not cover the additional mileage needed. must be on SQ metal.

let's say it like this... my daddy travelled on both, SQ and EK and when I asked him after his last escapade with EK how it was, he said ... "although i don't really like what has become of SQ these days, EK is still just a poor homage to SQ in their better days and nowhere near SQ now, leave alone SQ in the days of glory". He took the 77W in Y and C and both classes felt cramped in comparison to SQ.
Y in EK is definitely cramped (10 abreast versus 9). They definitely lose out to SQ in that respect.
However, judging from my most recent escapades in J on EK (77L) and SQ (388), EK surprisingly had the advantage. I'll be taking both SQ and EK long-haul all summer long, so we'll see who has the superior service staying power
I am excited about this upgrade voucher promo, however I wish SQ wasn't deleting so many of its long-haul destinations
it really ticks me off that there is not an applicable class of service bonus. they should encourage people to spend money for the premium cabins, yet they offer no incentive to do so.
The usual 25% or 50% CoS bonus does get included in the upgrade points. There are no extra points on top of that, if that's what you mean.
Actually, I think EK is doing a good job of giving SQ a run for its money these days. Flew return on one of their longest segments recently (upgraded oneway) and food, wines selection and quality was much better in both Y and J, not to mention onboard service that was much more responsive.
By comparison, flew the A380 from SYD in J recently and was not impressed. One of the galleys was leaking water and the floor was covered with towels. Upon take-off, the condensation produced an odor akin to being in the midst of sweaty marathon runners

However, you might like to consider that on other airlines you could fly twice for the same price as one SQ RTN and have enough miles for a free ticket?
SQ is being dragged into accepting reality so slowly it's like pulling teeth. But there's one born every minute.
Same here. I have got plenty of paid long haul travel coming up, but all booked on other carriers. If they drop the Fuel Penalties I may see if I can squeeze a trip or two in.
Doing 2x LHR-AKL R/t at GBP870 x 2 = GBP1740 gives you:
- Enough miles to obtain OZ Diamond/AC Elite = Star Gold
- If you credit to Krisflyer, nearly enough miles to become KF EG
- 48000 redeemable miles in whichever program you credit to
- Pretty much enough miles for the UG5 upgrade, which will allow an upgrade on LHR-SIN-SYD r/t on 77W/A380 Y-C, or C-F on the 77W. That's worth quite a huge chunk of miles!
If I had the time and spare cash to do these runs, I actually would - for people who would normally fly this much anyway, it's really a cracking deal.
Time is the key factor here....fares are incredible these days! ^
Walked into SQ Paragon today, and the agent was gushing about the Upgrade Vouchers, and if I had heard about it.
Knowing full well that I had read about it on SQTalk, but did not know where the furthest extent/flight routes the vouchers would cover, I led the discussion towards asking about specific flights/routes that would be allowed under UV1 to UV5.
The ultra-enthusiastic agent looked completely confused, went to ask her colleagues, who got into quite an upbeat discussion and the final answer was: all five of the SQ agents did not know. All they had been briefed on was to tell pax coming in to 'fly more' to 'earn more additional points *extra* to your KrisFlyer miles that you would earn anyhow.
And on top of that - they did not have a single idea that double-dipping (i.e. putting your miles on another *A FFP whilst getting KF 'UV points') was allowed, so they insisted I use my KF number in FQTV and FQTS.
Special Upgrade Offer on SQ - limited-time upgrade vouchers
This is a DESPERATE attempt to try to win back all the premium pax they have lost or p...ed off, but not very sincere or attractive offer.
Perhaps they could do better with companion fares (like MH right now) or reduce their ridiculous surcharge & premiums. When will SQ ever learn they are not the only airline offerring top notch premium products? When you have the means to pay your fares, who cares about points?

Wonderful.
Anyway, they managed to get me on a priority waitlist (which is a plus) for another SQ flight I had ticketed but departing at an inconvenient one to a more convenient one and then switched my credited miles-FFP 'officially' back to KF (which is not a plus). I have no doubt I'll have to go through the whole rigamarole of changing both fields once again at the airport, I'm sure. :/
