  • Singapore Airlines Introduces Tiered Fuel Surcharge

Singapore Airlines will lower its fuel surcharges for travellers in Business and Economy Class, across all routes, for tickets issued on or after Friday 7 November 2008.

Besides the length of the journey, the surcharge levels will hereafter also take into account the class of travel. This is to fairly impute fuel related cost since the space occupied and weight utilised in each class is different.

Good, but i still don't think its a significant enough reduction. Its barely 5% in some cases.

I wonder how this will impact on Krisflyer redemptions... if you have a ticketed Y ticket & upgrade to Business, do you need to pay the extra surcharge?

Don't think this will happen. You already paid the surcharge on the Y ticket purchase.

I don't know about KF but the answer is yes with BAEC - both the amounts of the taxes (i.e. APD) and surcharges are class dependent - so an upgrade using miles (MFU) will require additional cash to be paid.

oh, i see. Hopefully SQ will lower its surchange as the aviation oil prices will go down.

Good marketing strategy indeed, good news after bad.

                      Consider this scenario...

I ticket a booking to Europe after 7th Nov in Y including the US$95 in surcharges, then upgrade to J using (a ridiculous amount of) Krisflyer miles, I'm still $10 short on the fuel surcharge...

I wonder if KF will go about collecting this, or just write it off

Again, BA so SQ may surprise us with their proven generosity but when I recently did a MFU BA re-calculated the taxes and charges and phoned me up a few days later to take credit card details to collect the additional £10 that was due.

I am not surprised SQ will start charging fuel surcharge by pax weight in future! SQ is fond of being innovative but has not consider the practical side of things.

in fact fuel surcharges should be dropped altogether soon in the next few weeks as oil prices have come down to mid-2007 levels and avgas should be down back to 2007 level in a couple of months too.
Altho SQ have lower its surcharges - it also will charge for EY "preferred seats with extra legroom" ie on bulkhead seats n emergency row seats - just like tiger air. In fact air asia dont even charges for these seats actually.
