That's the exact description that I remember it to be when the design was first announced shortly after MSA was broken up. Don't remember there being any suggestion that it was a specific type of bird.
Well, this is the reply I received from SQ earlier today regarding The Golden Colored Bird...

Dear Mr UMD
Warm greetings. Thank you for your e-mail dated 8 February 2008.
We wish to inform you that the SIA logo is a bird symbol that makes no
reference to any particular bird. The bird symbol is a uniquely designed
identification device which graphically represents the company. It has
remained unchanged over the years and will continue to be the most important
element in our total communications system for years to come.
I hope we managed to address your query. Thank you once again for your
interest.
Mr UMD, we appreciate your continued loyalty and look forward with
great pleasure to welcoming you on your upcoming flight to Hong Kong this
Sunday.
Yours sincerely

I wonder did she do her homework by reading through the old editions (from the 70s) of the SQ staff newletter, Outlook. The bird is actually a stylised dove. Lost of institutional memory.....now sad.
