Definitely, Ryanair Group is just starting to replace their current fleet of 411 B737NG with first batch of order 200 MAX. They would need at least another 250 MAX to complete the replacement with some extra airframes for expansion. Unfortunately, Airbus could not care less about Ryanair, Airbus has openly said they don't wish to deal with Michael O Leary or Ryanair for that matter. I bet their quotation will be actual price tag instead of discounted ones. They cornered themselves to a wall.

AirAsia case was different, Boeing snubbed them back in 2003 when AirAsia issued the RFP. Boeing thought that with AirAsia large fleet of B737, MH strong Boeing narrowbody presence in MY coupled with previous B737 trained AirAsia MRO crew, it was a contract for them to lose. In the end, they lose.

Air Asia was only using Boeing to hedge and pushed for better pricing for its Airbus A330 only and doubt AK will even order the 787s as AK operates planes from one manufacturer for economics of scale operations. Similarly for Ryanair, Airbus knew that they will not be able to get it anyway.

It's a little disappointing that SQ won't allow you to refund or change the route if your aircraft is switched to a 737 MAX. They are also trying their hardest the hide that you're on a MAX.

            How are they hiding it?

While they aren't allowing people to change flights off the MAX willy nilly, it's just not true that they are trying to hide the fact that the flight is operated by a MAX. Their booking engine indicates quite clearly where the aircraft is a Boeing 737-8 MAX (that's literally what it says). I don't know how much more obvious they can make it.

They don't include the MAX in most of their branding. They call it the 737-8.

                For example:

I mean, if youre on an SQ 737, chances are you may get the 737 MAX. To fully avoid this, maybe one should try to fly another airline that doesn't operate the MAX?

SIA still identify the aircraft you are travelling on even for the 737 Max. When you do the booking online and have chosen you flights, for example SQ114 then you just click on the flight number under more details - and it shows the exact type of aircraft ie 737-8 Max.
Of course in a couple of years when all its ex-Silkair 737-800 are replaced, then SIA will operate all 737-8 Max and by then it may not include the word Max in.

Yeah, even I was confused when doing some dummy bookings. I came to know 737-NG is basically just a regular 737-800, whereas the MAX is the 737 MAX 8. Looks like it's deployed on all India routes previously operated with the 737 NG.

Guess I gotta get used to the naming convention as I haven't flown a 737 MAX yet, even for a US domestic flight.

                      • SQ 737MAX to serve CNS. A number of frequent traveller friends are already switching bookings away from SQ due to the 737 equipment. Although the China accident was a 737NG, it fuelled the angst abut the 737 MAX issues. In simple terms, may pilots, technicians, etc. are still very unimpressed about the 737MAX design and the fundamental centre of gravity issues. Many believe the aircraft should never have been certified by the FAA given the requirement for software to balance the weight issues. Although sensors were doubled and systems enhanced, a lot of people will not fly on the MAX. Airbus continues to win major orders as premium airlines do not see the 737MAX as a viable long term alternative (hence, the push for the "797" or next gen narrow body rather than extending the 1950 design concept further...).

                        • I have an issue with the culture that Boeing has, the attitude and the way the dealt with the MAX incident. It ultimately killed a number of people.

Would really be interesting to see the Star Alliance C/S, especially whether would SQ do an “all white” Star Alliance c/s just like a couple of their 77Ws, or whether they would adopt a “standard” SA c/s. Or even go back towards the likes of their former Star Alliance c/s with the SA titles but SQ’s Silver Kris logo on the tail…
