  • ATC at Suvarnabhumi playing silly buggers

Not sure what the reasoning behind this was, or if it's the start of a trend but apparently it's not the first time it's happened recently.

Boarded LX181 to ZRH last night and before scheduled departure time tannoy announcement confirmed boarding completed and numbers correct. Doors closed and we sat there for a few minutes. Captain came on and said we're ready to go but due to restrictions on arriving at ZRH before 6am we need to wait a short while.

So we sat there for 20 minutes and the captain came on and said that ATC are not allowing us to go and are giving no reason why. Meanwhile OS, LH etc all push back and leave. After another 10 minutes he is back on saying they have now told us we will go in an hour , no explanation given despite requests, and he added 'someone seems to be playing cat and mouse with us and we have no idea why'.

A few minutes later he came into the F cabin for chat. He threw his arms up and was shaking his head, visibly annoyed. Fair play to the cabin crew who asked him to come over to non-German speaking yours truly to explain what was going on.

He said they had been given four slots and each time they requested push back they were simply told 'you've missed your slot, stand-by for further information'. For the 2355 slot he requested push back at 2340 and got same message!!. He apparently told them what he thought of this and demanded an explanation only to, in his words 'suddenly have the girls unable to speak English'. He was not a happy chappy.

Apparently, a similar thing happened to BA and LH the week before according to LX ground staff, so god knows whats going on there.

Of course, with LX/ZRH operating on quick connection times loads of us have missed connecting flights. I suppose being weekend is not as bad as a work day, and there are worse places to be then the LX F lounge here, but I would rather be en route to MAN....

That's a pain. Surely the airport isn't operating at undercapacity already?
All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

Captain said there was no mention of slot restrictions, which would have been understandable as there are a lot of birds heading from S.E. Asia to Europe late at night. The SQ flight to MAN is regularly held back due to slot restrictions as it's one of the last to leave Changi. They just kept saying 'you've missed your slot' each time he requested push back for the slot we had been given.

He said they were simply being very awkward for no apparent reason. I did jokingly ask if they owed AOT any money, and he looked aghast before assuring me they didn't.
