Air India 787 crashes upon take-off at Ahmedabad Airport (12 June 2025)

Oh no, there are news reports of Air India flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London crashing shortly after take-off earlier today. This appears to be a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

It was suggested that AI CEO Campbell Wilson was onboard an AI flight from Delhi to Paris (on his way to the Paris Air Show) but the plane diverted back to Delhi after the tragic news broke so that he can return to take charge of the terrible accident in Ahmedabad

A lot of speculation online about the cause of the crash. I'm keen to find out too, of course. As a pax, I always think modern jets like the 787 are safe (Also the 757/767/777 which also have excellent safety records), so it's scary when one goes down like this.

So many personal and family tragedies on board, and on the ground. Not an easy time for anyone involved. My heart goes out to all the victims and their loved ones.

Glad that one pax seated at 11A survived. One bit of good news at least.

Lots of speculation online about the causes of the crash, and even fake news in the form of outright fake/false cockpit voice recorder transcripts etc. No official findings have been released so far.

Based on the (real) press release below, it does appear that the so called "black boxes" ie. the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR), were successfully retrieved and are now undergoing analysis:

There seems to be some consensus on what happened (fuel cut off switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF), but lots of ongoing debate and discussion as to why.

Notably, the report does not suggest a mechanical failure or design defect with the Boeing 787 aircraft itself.
