OK - place your bets please.

TAM is a member of the Star Alliance group of airlines, which includes BMI, Lufthansa, SAS and Air China.

Meanwhile LAN is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance, which includes Iberia, British Airways, Qantas and JAL.

The airlines have not yet said which one they will join.

        Afraid not!

"The regulators in Chile stipulated that the combined entity has to be a member of one alliance only and could not be in the same alliance as Avianca-Taca, which is a member of Star Alliance."

Not so fast...Avianca-Taca are in the process of joining, scheduled to be completed by April 2012. With LATAM being the far bigger prize, I bet the *A team are working hard to make sure LATAM ends up in *A. Whatever that might mean for Avianca-Taca.
