  • MAS Economy Class worth taking anymore?

I've flew MAS quite a few times in the past few months for both short and long haul, mostly in Y. Also they've been rated 5 stars, along with SIA, Cathay, Qatar, Kingfisher. Over the years they've seem to got worse, to me at least, compared to SQ

Whenever I fly in Y especially on shorter sectors with them I find that some other airlines like Emirates and even Silkair is better. First of all some of their flight attendants don't bother to break a smile. And when they see an elderly passenger trying to lift his bag to store it in the overhead bin they don't even help. When serving drinks they use trays (for short haul), and once a choice a of drink runs out some of them continue serving what's left. And once I asked for a pillow from a steward he said "sorry we're out", but I clearly saw some stowed in the overhead bins

And their A330s don't have PTV although they're used on flights over 5 hours (like KUL - PEK). Food isn't too bad, but not great either.

And out of 5 flights I take, about 2 are delayed or depart late. Just wondering if this always happens to anyone else?

For SGD$398 SIN-KUL-NRT, some would argue that yes, they are worth taking...

its only good to fly MH only if on their T7s and 744s as their EY seat pitch is the best at 34" n it seems more than that when seated, which is better than SQ's 32". For inflight meals for longer flights its alright - but for short flights under 4 hrs its usually their box meals which are unpopular with pax.
One also have to compare their fares - but again only for their T7s and 744s, their EY is perfectly ok.

But remember that MH isn't an LCC , they may offer low fares, but that doesn't mean they should give LCC services.

So what total sample size are we talking about here?

With some of their ridiculously low fares out of SIN, I don't even care if they served anything onboard! Booked a MH flight SIN-KUL-NRT in Mar'10 for S$534, easily $200 less than the nearest competitor fare!

I just flew KUL-BKK today on a 737-400. Okay, seat pitch was tight but not too uncomfortable. I duly fell asleep even before the doors closed! So much for reading and listening to my iPod.

But then the meals started. MH cleverly uses bio-degradable meal trays and the contents are well suited for this short flight. In it are, 3 Ferrera Rocher chocs, a small piece of raisin cake, a small cup of water, and the piece de resistant is : Chicken satay with fried rice. What airline (SQ or TG) serves satay in economy? Okay it was only 3 sticks but the peanut sauce was yummy, and the rice even had taste to it. Cabin crew filled drink orders quickly too.

I thought the raisin cake was the dessert which I didn't eat by the way. Then one of the stewardesses came round and handed out Baskin & Robbins mini tubs of ice cream. Wow. I certainly didn't expect this on a regional flight on a 737 aircraft.

All in all, 2 hours passed by quickly and I'd recommend MH over LCCs like Air Asia if the price diff isn't that great. I got 25kg of baggage allowance too.

Best of all, I get full 100% miles on my DL account for this fare.

I just flew KUL > BKI > (KCH) > SIN with them at a fantastic price, below RM300. Price was on par with Air Asia (exc. 20kg baggage, meals etc). They served a little "snack box" with plastic cutlery, their toilets only have soap, no warm towels served but for that price, we can't really complain right ? (Though I did expect a little more from them.) Unless you're paying full fare (nearly RM1000)..

It seemed MH offers more food in economy on KUL-BKK compared to SQ on SIN-BKK. What MH lacked is the presentation of the meals.

I just flew earlier today PEN to SIN with MH, none of their cabin crew smiled at all, as if they were forced to be on the flight

Actually I liked the fact that everything was disposable. The 'tray' it says with a little explanation, is made of sugar cane fibres that can be easily broken down when dumped in landfills. Everything else can be recycled.

Oh ya, and MH doesn't give out any wet towels anymore.. which is a sore point in my books. What with Malaysia asking people to be diligent in keeping H1N1 at bay.. that MH does away with hot towels. Give at least prepackaged wipes.

Although everything's disposable, I do find it "a class below" SQ, that uses metal cutlery etc. And what MH can do is maybe at least put a bottle of hand sanitizer in their toilets?

Not a bad airline.I have only been on them once and that was in late 2008 ADL-KUL-ADL THE FOOD IS not too bad and the seat pitch excellent. The Only Thing I find annoying is that only certain classes on MH Economy qualify for Velocity or Enrich Miles meaning going out of the way to find a fare for mileage or earning points.other than that no complaints.
