  • Winter affair with BJ/Xi'an - with HU, CA and FM

Brother was in town (Shanghai) for a conference in Dec 09 and he brought along his wife. They decided to stay back for a few days after the conference to contribute to Chinese economy. Being their 4th times in Shanghai in 2 years, I was really cracking my head struggling to think of interesting places to bring them around. As the wife is around, bar-sauna-disco hopping does not sound like a good idea … Being overseas Chinese, they are of course very interested in seeing the great history of China – so BJ and Xi’an off we go.

For the trip, we took Hainan Airlines (HU) from Shanghai Hongqiao to Beijing terminal 1 – the cheapest option for the day (a Thursday morning).

No aerobridge was assigned for the flight which would take us to Beijing, an baby Boeing 737-800 …

Only a slight 15 mins delay and off we went … rare for a Chinese airlines, the pilot actually came online and addressed the cabin giving flight details, in perfect English ! From his ascent, we were guessing the pilot is from Singapore/Malaysia – which is very comforting for my in-law as that was her first time taking Chinese airlines and apparently had some mis-conceptions about them …

The aircraft is very clean and the stewardess speaks good English. Legroom is OK for a short flight … (SQFG – owe you a royalty for this )

    Breakfast served was edible …

In-flight entertainment consisted of LCD screens showing Chinese-made cartoon … Me and my brother spent time pretending to chat while appreciating the beautiful stewardesses, me openly whilst he secretly.

Soon enough we landed safely at Beijing terminal one. I swear that when we touched down, I “overheard” a sigh of relief from my in-law, and a sigh of “why is the flight so short” from my brother …

HU ranks very highly on my preferred carrier list in Mainland China whenever I want a cheap flight and when I don’t care about Asia Miles or Star Alliance points. I always have a pleasant experience with HU throughout my 6 years of occasional flights with them.

We stayed at Park Plaza Wangfujing Beijing – an adequate 4-star property at a very good location. Forgot to take picture as I’ve stayed there too many times! … so sorry !

We spent the next two days visiting the must-visit in BJ – in cold cold weather:

    The Forbidden City:

Some random seat in the palace

This is apparently where the emperor spent his wedding night(sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss) …

After several hours at the Forbidden City in sub-zero temperature, the highlight of the day (for me, as I’ve been to Forbidden City 6 times prior to the trip) is no doubt :

    (To be continued … )
When the going gets tough, the tough go travelling ...

      Thanks for sharing.

I'm amazed walking through the Forbidden City of how spartan the rooms were in those days.

I mean, this guy is rich & powerful but so little furniture.

      No home entertainment system either!

Well, he has other types of 'entertainment'... to keep him company...

          I don't think he minded not having a hi-fi + plasma...

If you think about it, any of us have homes that are more comfortable than how the emperor used to live.

The only two things that he had that are " nice to have" are:
              1. palace guards
              2. his types of "entertainment"

The next day, we visited the Great Wall at Mutianyu section. The Mutianyu section receives much lesser visitors compared to the Badaling section – reasons of which completely escape my comprehension. The trip was my third time visiting Mutianyu and I was still in awe by the spectacular scenery …

I found it quite hard to get good composition to frame the Great Wall due to its monotonous structure, the fixed path, the same-same-but-different wilderness, the ruggedness of the terrains … but if one is willing to track far to explore further and is fit enough, the photographic results can be very rewarding … well you can see from the picture below, I tried … but so obviously was neither ...

Sooooo steep ! Proud of myself of making it to the top .. and down … in one piece

The light condition improves gradually …

After spending 6 hours at the site, we took the cable car down at almost 5pm – the closing time for the cable car …

After Great Wall, we drove to Olympic park to take pictures ..

We spent the night sampling local delicacy at Wangfujing street, and finished the night with a well deserved 2 hour foot massage … my legs couldn’t thank me enough for the treat ..

His types of "entertainment" ? You mean imperial cook ? hmmmm

But seriously, I am sure the guy does not need tv, hi-fi ... he has live entertainment whenever wherever whatever however he wants it ...

Thanks for the pictures so far, Flyerfly!

My only experience of HU was four years ago - a Y return from PEK to Kunming (KMG). On one of my flights, I remember that the cabin crew held an auction (!) with a lot of the pax excitedly bidding for something. My Mandarin was/is not too good so I didn't know what it was. I enjoyed the "IFE" too...

The next day, we went to Heaven Temple ...

Looking majestic after the recent refurbishment …

OK I am bringing you back and put you in my backyard …

Soon enough it’s time to go to the airport for our flight to Xi’an … on the way, we passed by CCTV building …

We decided to take Air China’s flight to Xi’an, because my brother and my sister-in-law have not visited the humongous BJ Terminal 3 … and because I want the Star Alliance flight to qualify myself for the Star Alliance status match promotion offered in HK …

The flight was operated by a 767-300 .. as it was the second leg of a Japan-BJ-Xi’an route, it was parked at the international wing of the terminal and we had to be bussed there …

The seating arrangement in Y is a typical 2-3-2 …

Seat width and leg room are normal …

                      IFE …

I meant the Chinese produced cartoon on projected screen … not …

                      Reading material …

Being a not-meal-hour flight (our flight was scheduled to depart at 4pm) … we were nevertheless served a “dim sum” …

Mysterious meat .. but tasted OK …

After one hour delay and two hours of flight, we arrived at Xi’an XianYang airport …
